Paulo Caroli · From Strategy to Outcomes

Even though Drucker wrote about management decades before AI existed, his core idea — manage by objectives, not by detailed instructions — is exactly what modern AI-driven teams now need.

Back in 1954, Peter Drucker introduced the idea of Management by Objectives in his book The Practice of Management.

His point was simple:
when people doing the work know more than the manager, you cannot manage through detailed instructions.

You manage through objectives.

Now, with AI agents everywhere, this idea matters more than ever.

Developers with coding agents.
Marketers with AI copilots.
Analysts with AI doing research in minutes.

Individuals are becoming incredibly productive — and increasingly autonomous.

That’s powerful.

But it also creates a new challenge:
people start optimizing locally, each one moving fast in their own direction.

Without shared objectives, teams fragment.

And this is exactly why Team OKRs matter now more than ever.

Not because AI changed management.
But because AI amplified the need for alignment.

Team OKRs help organizations create:

  • shared direction,

  • clear outcomes,

  • alignment across teams,

  • and focus on impact instead of activity.

The role of leadership today is not to micromanage methods.

It is to create clarity around objectives.

Drucker already told us this decades ago.

AI simply made it impossible to ignore.
