Fireflies, Sunflowers, & Sunsets
The sun sets tonight at nine minutes after eight. Early August usually provides enough ambient light to do stuff outdoors until nine PM. This time of year also allows for people watching out any open window, which I have been doing on the regular during my rehab of recent surgeries. My garden this year has mostly been neglected. Though the previous four years of gardening this particular plot appears to be enough to carry me through a quiet year.
I conceived of a garden with only perennials flowers, bushes & herbs. There were also an abundant number of volunteer plants like the sunflowers and the morning glories. It’s been so wet in my neighborhood that I haven’t had to water at all. This gave me a good sized crop of red seedless grapes from the vines I planted on the arbor four years ago.
We also have the occasional gathering of fireflies in our back garden. Tell the truth we have few insects by my estimation, or at least I don’t feel them. I also increase my odds by ripping stems of mint in my hands every day to give me a herd immunity from gnats. The rest of the insects I leave to the birds to keep under control. Except for the bees, who figure prominently in my gardening plans. I grow a variety of flowering plants to entice them to stay put and nose around the garden all they want. I offer the same most favored insect sobriquet to ladybugs & spiders.

Sometimes it can be hard to see how we fit within a larger system of serving children, youth, and families. For any system or community to encourage, enrich, and empower human interactions and relationships, we must have people working together in support of one another. We all have a role to play in promoting developmental interactions and relationships around children, youth, and their helpers. The following video demonstrates our ideas of how systems and communities can work together to support a relationship-based vision.

One of my happiest moments as a former Director of Study Abroad and International education. It happened in Turkey. This wonderful gentlemen shared his love for the USA. And we had the most marvelous meeting marked by genuine interest and mutual respect for our countries. The world needs more folks like this guy.
