Paul Kingsnorth · The Abbey of Misrule

Hello everyone. Before we get started on this month’s salon, let me plug yet another book. They seem to be coming out of my ears at the moment. This time it’s the UK paperback of Against The Machine, which is published this coming September. Waterstones is currently running an offer for those of you who are chomping at the bit to pre-order it: until midnight this coming Friday, you will get 25% off if you place a pre-order.

If you fancy taking advantage of this offer, you can visit this page, and enter the code ‘SUMMER26’ when you buy the book. My paperbacks arrived here last week, and they are looking very splendid. Paperbacks have their own character, I find, and this one is serious and yet playful. Not a bad combination.

On to another book, and thanks to all of you who offered up questions for my forthcoming ‘Ask Me Anything’ session about The Wake a few days back. There’s still time to ask more if you fancy. I’ll be answering my favourites next week, and awarding a free signed book to the best of them.

Some time soon after that I’ll have something else to write about my plans for the next year or so, what will be happening at the Abbey, and other elements of life, the universe and everything. I am still recovering from my major episode of burnout at the end of last year, when the Machine attempted to eat me alive, so things are slower than they could be, but this is OK, and will have to be. I am deep in the tide of whatever is emerging at present. Not everything is clear, but some things increasingly are. More on all of this soon.

One more thing before I pass the baton to you, readers. There will be a few events coming up for me this autumn and winter, and I’ll have more detials on them soon. There will be a couple in America - in Alabama and Wisconsin in November - one in Ireland in October, and one in the Netherlands in November. I will bring you more details on all of these when I have them.

Before all of those, in September, I’ll be attending Jonathan Pageau’s Symbolic World Summit in Oxford, England. I won’t be speaking - I’ll be relaxing as an audience member for a change - but the roster is illustrious, and the subjects under discussion are right up the Abbey’s Street. In case you fancy coming along yourself, the full details are here.

That’s enough of the admin. Now it’s time to open up the floor to you all. I find right now it can be hard to speak about anything going on in the world: it’s all moving so fast, very little seems clear, and there is a strange indefinable sense that we are all somehow waiting for something. It does make writing harder. Am I the only one who feels like this? Perhaps you can tell me below. But I’d like to hear what you have to say about that, and anything else that is on your mind this hot July. Over to you.

My new writing at the Abbey of Misrule is currently free to read. To help keep it free, and support those who can’t afford to pay, please consider a donation or a paid subscription. Thank you!
