Tectonism – A Manifesto
We are at a threshold. The discipline of architecture has spent over forty years adrift in a self-indulgent pluralism, mistaking its own fragmentation for freedom and its disorientation for richness. This manifesto declares that the interregnum is over. A new epochal style has matured – Parametricism – and within it a decisive sub-style has crystallised that now constitutes the most sophisticated, and most consequential architecture of our century: Tectonism.
I declare Tectonism to be the most advanced architectural style of our time: the mature, self-conscious, technically empowered phase of Parametricism. It is the architectural articulation of the computational civilization now unfolding across the world, and in this sense historically necessary. It is the style adequate to the 21st century because it alone is capable of giving spatio-visual order to the unprecedented complexity of contemporary society. Tectonism is not one option among many. It is the rightful hegemonic style for the 21st century, and I proclaim it as such without apology.
Let us be clear about the historical stakes. Styles are not matters of taste; they are the means by which architecture absorbs and responds to societal transformation and re-coordinates the collective design effort of an entire epoch. Each epoch or socio-economic stage of society was – with some delay – eventually served by a unified epochal style. The Renaissance answered early capitalism, the Baroque responded to mercantilism and absolutism, Historicism answered the bourgeois nation-state, and Modernism facilitated Fordist mass society. The age of Modernism is over. Its heroic historical achievement must be acknowledged, but its recipes have become obsolete. Modernism belonged to the mechanical age, to Fordism, to the regime of industrial standardisation, with mechanical mass production delivering a universal consumption standard, and in the urban realm homogenisation via repetition and functional separation via zoning. It delivered standard solutions for a mass society organised around typified institutions, stable roles, and rigid functional divisions. But our world is no longer that world. Our society – the Post-Fordist network society – is defined by new, decisive socio-economic features: flexible specialisation, dense communication, perpetual re-association in fluid networks. The architecture it demands is not the serial monotony of Modernism, which expired with the Fordist mechanical mass production, nor the cacophony that erupted in Modernism’s wake. It is a complex, variegated, lawfully differentiated order. Parametricism delivers that order, and Tectonism is its most potent contemporary instrument. A unified style is not authoritarian monotony. It is the precondition for cumulative intelligence. It allows many authors to contribute to a shared language. It allows difference without chaos, variation without arbitrariness, freedom without noise. Nature is not monotonous because it is lawful; it is inexhaustibly rich because it is lawful. Tectonism aims at the same condition: an urban ecology of differentiated, correlated, mutually resonant forms, generated by intelligible principles and open to infinite variation.
Parametricism substituted the static object with the adaptive field, the isolated element with the scripted relation, the rigid type with the malleable topology. Yet the early phases of Parametricism—foldism, blobism, swarmism—were only the opening movements. They released architecture from the tyranny of the box, but they still had to acquire a deeper discipline. Tectonism is this discipline. It is the moment when Parametricism absorbs the intelligence of advanced engineering, structural optimisation, environmental performance, material computation, and robotic fabrication, and turns these logics into articulate architectural form.
We reject the comfortable consensus that stylistic pluralism is an inevitable condition in our time. During the 1970s and 1980s, in the period of transition from Fordism to Post-fordism, architectural Modernism experienced its crisis and demise. But Parametricism was not yet on the horizon. Transitional styles like postmodernism, deconstructivism emerged, competing with high-tech as the latest stage of modernism. The break-up of architectural culture into competing search trajectories was, at this moment, a natural and necessary development. But the moment where this was productive has long passed. Retro-styles like neo-historicism and minimalism (neo-modernism) also vied for attention. Collective brainstorming was necessary but cannot be a permanent condition. Postmodernism and Deconstructivism performed their transitional tasks, but they cannot guide us now. They broke the spell of modernist certainty, but they did not construct a new order. During the 1990s parametricism emerged when a whole generation of architects extended and transformed what deconstructivism had achieved via the utilisation of new computational design tools and processes. Since the early 2000s tectonism emerged when the computational empowerment encompassed also engineering and construction, with tectonism folding this back into the design process.
A viable, mature paradigm has evolved and proven itself for nearly a quarter of a century. However, parametricism’s and tectonism’s expansion stalled since the 2008 crash and adoption remains sluggish. This is the architectural expression of the general stagnation the advanced societies are experiencing (due to over-politicisation and statist overreach). Very restrictive, politicised planning prescriptions are slowing down development and disincentivising innovation. From our discipline’s perspective this continued failure to converge upon the new paradigm is not pluralist tolerance – it is intellectual confusion due to the immaturity of an undisciplined discourse. The unity and coherence of our cities is at stake. A built environment that cannot agree on its own language cannot orient those who must live within it. Pluralism is not a virtue when it produces dysfunction, illegibility and visual chaos. It is a pathology to be overcome.
We must also defend the very concept of style against those who imagine the concept to imply a superficiality that undermines the seriousness of the discipline. Style is not surface, fashion, or transient decoration. The concept of style(s) in the design disciplines plays the role the concept of paradigm(s) plays in the sciences. A style is the means by which the collective labour of architecture is coordinated into a coherent epochal project – a shared system of principles, methods, and values that lets thousands of designers, working independently across the globe, contribute to a single civilisational order rather than towards cacophony and mutual obstruction. Without a unifying style there can be no cumulative progress, only the churn of fashions. To name and canonise a style is therefore not vanity but a precondition of advance. Neither the parametricism manifesto put forward in 2008, nor the tectonism manifesto put forward here, is an invention or imposition; it is the self-description, recognition and consolidation of a sustained, worldwide avant-garde movement that had matured long before it was given its name. Tectonism is the sharpest edge of that movement now.
What, then, is Tectonism? Tectonism is the stylistic heightening of engineering and fabrication-based form-finding into a system of architectural articulation. Tectonism is not engineering. It is architecture making engineering logics speak. It does not abandon Parametricism – it rationalises and intensifies it. Where earlier sub-styles – Foldism, Blobism, Swarmism – explored innovative compositional logics, Tectonism embeds a series of technical rationalities that secure both greater efficiency, greater morphological rigour, while preserving sufficient degrees of freedom for the designer to exercise the discipline’s irreducible core competency: the framing of social communication through built form. With respect to this core competency of architecture, Tectonism’s versatile power of expression goes beyond anything hitherto available to architects.
Gothic vaults, Gaudí’s hanging models, Candela’s shells, Frei Otto’s tensile structures and material experiments were anticipations of Tectonism’s agenda. They discovered that form is not a platonic idea but that efficient form can emerge from the intricate interplay of forces. They are the true precursors of tectonism. But only today, with computational engineering, finite element analysis, topology optimisation, environmental simulation, parametric modelling, machine learning, robotic fabrication and 3D printing etc., can the pioneer’s intuition become a universal architectural paradigm. What was once exceptional craft and empirical genius can now become a systematic design research programme. Tectonism is therefore not nostalgia for craft. It is the radicalization of tectonics under conditions of computation.
Tectonism is also the true architecture of sustainability. Sustainability is not achieved by attaching smart machines to dumb boxes. It must shape the very morphology of architecture. Sun, wind, rain, thermal exposure, daylight, ventilation, drainage, material minimisation and fabrication constraints must become architectural drivers. The building’s orientation, massing, envelope and articulation must respond visibly to environmental conditions. A façade should translate and reveal solar exposure. A roof should register water and wind. A shading system should become an urban compass. Environmental rationality must become spatial and visual intelligence.
Tectonism delivers an aesthetic revolution. It brings forth a new aesthetic sensibility and thus a new conception of beauty: not the classical architectural beauty of symmetry and proportion, not the beauty of pure geometry, not the beauty of industrial repetition, but the beauty of organized complexity. It is the beauty of force flows, gradients, fibrous fields, intricate branching structures, reticulated shells, porous variegated skins, differentiated exoskeletons, cascading seams, adaptive apertures and environmental modulation. It is a beauty close to the beauty of organic nature, not because it imitates nature’s appearance, but because it shares nature’s mode of lawful formation. But beauty is never a free-standing value in its own right. It is perceived via intuitive, immediate subjective responses and signals beneficial high performance environments to those who acquired the up-to-date aesthetic sensibilities. Whenever the technological and/or social conditions of beneficial performance change, our aesthetic sensibilities must be brought in line with these conditions via aesthetic revolutions.
Engineering is responsible for the technical performance of the built environment. Architecture is responsible for its social performance. These two competencies must be sharply distinguished, yet the two must intensely collaborate. The engineer guarantees physical functioning; the architect orchestrates spatial and visual communication. But under Tectonism, the very same forms serve both purposes. Structural members, shells, ribs, exoskeletons, brise soleil structures, tessellations, apertures, gradients, joints, seams, fabrication traces become at once technically motivated and communicatively charged. They lead a double life: silently carrying forces, modulating climate, enabling fabrication, while visibly orienting users, characterising spaces, and articulating social situations. This is the core of Tectonism: the expressive utilisation of engineering logics. The building must become an information-rich interface. Its users must be able to read it, navigate it, infer its organisation, and intuitively understand its social offerings on the basis of the visual clues broadcast by architectural articulation. Architecture must once more become a legible ordering system for society. Architecture must speak. The ultimate task is semiological: to build up a new, versatile, expressive spatio-visual language for contemporary society. We must design not only spaces but systems of signification. The differences between programmes, atmospheres, degrees of privacy, types of encounter, modes of work etc. must find corresponding spatio-morphological differentiations. These differentiations must be systematic, learnable and intuitively navigable.
The designed environment is not merely shelter. It is a spatial ordering and communication system. It separates and connects, marks and differentiates, invites and inhibits, directs and gathers. It frames social interaction. It tells us where we are, who we are among, what kind of encounter is possible, what level of formality is expected, what kind of communication is solicited. This informs and empowers end-users who can read the social protocols that structure the event they are about to join and participate within. All participants are brought onto the same page, configured into the mutually complementary positions and social roles that allow an event to proceed smoothly and productively, achieving its social purpose. The more complex society becomes, the more articulate this environment must become. The crude neutrality of modernist space is therefore no longer progressive. It is an abdication. Minimalism is not refinement but retreat. Its silence is not profundity but refusal.
Here lies our central conviction, and our central polemic. The built environment is not merely a stack of technical solutions. It is a medium of communication. Every space, every modulated structural system, every differentiated envelope addresses its users, defining the social situation, telling them where they are, what is offered, and how to act, i.e. which protocols of interaction are governing the gathering. Architecture’s task is the ordering and framing of social interaction, and it discharges this task through spatial distribution and connection, as well as – crucially – via the legibility of its spatial forms read as designated social situations. The structural and the environmental morphologies that engineering produces are not obstacles to expression to be hidden or obfuscated. They are the raw material of expression. To deny them, to clad them over, to invent an arbitrary decorative layer on top of them, is both wasteful and would leave the communication with less credibility. The articulatory exploitation of technically motivated form is more economical, and – because the signifier is already an index of real functional motivators – it is a more trustworthy broadcast of information. Tectonic articulation transforms the indexical sign into a symbolic, deliberately communicative one. This is the instrumentality of ornament rightly understood: ornament is not the enemy of performance but a special category of it – communicative performance. Architectural theory had been reflecting on this task of expressive characterization since the 18th Century, when the notions of ‘character’ and ‘expression’ were taken from the theatre and introduced into architectural theory by Germain Boffrand 1745v Livre d’architecture.
We therefore reject two opposing errors with equal force. We reject the Modernist taboo against ornament, the puritanism that strips the built environment to a mute, isotropic repetition and calls its poverty honesty. An undifferentiated order of sameness offers no navigational or orienting information; it abandons the user to disorientation. And we reject, equally, arbitrary ornamentation, as well as the hypostasis of structural expressionism – the fetishising of tectonic display as an end in itself, severed from the social function it ought to articulate. Tectonism subordinates the eloquence of structure and material articulation to the communication of social purpose. The building does not boast about its loads; it guided the users to their destination, tells them about the social situation they are about to join, and coordinates their interactions. This is empowering, and indeed an increasingly indispensable priming for participants, in order to have productive interaction experiences in an urban world where the panoply of communication situations are bewilderingly diverse.
This ambition and task does not stop at the building scale. It extends, necessarily, to the urban district and city scale. The contemporary metropolis is the engine of the knowledge economy, the dense synergy-cluster within which the productivity of each depends on legible, navigable proximity to all. Modernist urbanism – its zoning, its separation, its serial repetition – cannot serve our current lifes. It fragments what must be woven together and homogenises what must be differentiated. Tectonism answers with a complex, variegated urban order in which built forms register and respond to one another, establishing affiliations and continuities across the whole field. It establishes vectors of transformation that can be navigated intuitively just like a bacterium navigates along a nutrition gradient. Tectonism gives this urban order its articulate physiognomy: districts that read as coherent wholes despite their versatility, landmarks that orient, gradients that guide. Spatial topology in the service of social topology is, at the urban scale, nothing less than the recovery of legibility for cities that Modernism left mute and the laissez-faire aftermath left chaotic. A city that can be read is a city that can be lived.
This is sophisticated, exacting work, and architects cannot any longer rely on precedents. The raw, unedited imposition of pragmatic engineering priorities does not yield legibility – it yields visual chaos, an agglomeration of unreconciled concerns. Order must be imposed through a ruthless formalism: a disciplined regime of accentuation and suppression in which selected morphological features are heightened into a system of signification. The designer must orchestrate, select, edit. Tectonic articulation is the strategic détournement of an element’s technically induced morphology into the service of social meaning. It demands an intense and congenial collaboration between architect and engineer – a collaboration of distinct responsibilities discharged by the very same forms, the engineer guaranteeing their silent physical functioning, the architect orchestrating their eloquent social communication.
The discipline this demands is not improvised; it can be codified, as the author has done in his Manifesto of Parametricism in 2008, by positing both formal and functional heuristics that must be strictly adhered to if the power of parametricism is to be brought to bear. These heuristics are giving a decisive direction to the search for design solutions. However, they operate on a level of abstraction that leaves ample space for creative exploration. Indeed, the search space opened up by these heuristics is much larger than the combined space of all prior architectural styles – from the Renaissance to Modernism - put together. Tectonism is fully encompassed within these heuristic strictures. However, the search space and versatility opened up by tectonism is, again, much larger as all prior substyles pf parametricism – foldism, blobism, swarmism – put together.
Tectonism advances as a design research programme, governed – like every serious paradigm – by a hard core of principles that can be expressed by heuristics, both formal and functional heuristics, both expressed via a series of taboos and dogmas. We hold to its negative heuristics without exception and without nostalgic compromise: no rigid platonic primitives – no squares, cubes, pyramids, spheres – for these forms are inert and insensitive, incapable of inflection or nuanced relation; no simple repetition, that monotony which corresponds to the social homogenisation Modernism imposed; and no collage of unrelated elements delivering the chaos of garbage spill urbanisation. And we pursue its positive heuristics relentlessly: all forms parametrically malleable, all systems differentiated through gradients, all systems correlated into networks of mutual interdependence. These formal principles are paired with their functional counterparts, for function in our paradigm is not a fixed stereotype but a field of variable activity-scenarios in which everything communicates with everything else, instead of being separated via segregative zoning. This is not arbitrary doctrine. It is the operational definition of a style, and only by holding to it without backsliding can the new architecture be put fully to the test. Tectonism inherits this entire apparatus and intensifies it, binding the discipline of articulation to the shaping disciplines of structure, environmental engineering, and versatile, numerically controlled fabrication processes.
The conditions for this achievement are, for the first time in history, fully present. The computational revolution has placed sophisticated structural form-finding, environmental optimisation, and robotic fabrication into the hands of the designer at the earliest stages of conception. Physics engines, generative tools, and material-aware fabrication logics – robotic assembly, 3D printing – have expanded the disciplined universe of buildable form beyond anything available to prior generations. The visual trace of these processes – ‘faktura’ – returns as a positive, character-bearing quality. The result is a morphological and material repertoire that is at once richly diverse and deeply coherent, like the endless yet lawful forms of nature. This is not arbitrary novelty. It is rule-governed abundance.
Tectonism is already a worldwide movement – a collective avant-garde endeavour of many talents across many continents, advancing through research, teaching, and built work, fusing global best practice with regional materials and traditions. It is not the property of any single office. It is a research programme and a shared repertoire, capable of infinite local adaptation precisely because its general principles are abstract and open-ended. No region, culture, or subculture stands outside its reach, because differentiation and adaptation are its very essence.
I do not claim that the work is finished. The fully satisfactory built examples remain, as yet, relatively few and relatively modest in scale. But this is the condition of every style at its dawn, and it is no argument against the thesis – it is a summons. I make a wager on the long-term rationality of the discipline: on its capacity to recognise, through its own internal discourse, the superiority of this paradigm, and on the rationality of a wider society – of clients, of users – to accept the guidance an upgraded architectural expert discourse is able to give. The future of 21st century architecture will be decided not by the timid accumulation of more incompatible options, but by the courage to converge. The avant-garde must stop apologising for ambition. Architecture must again claim the right to lead, to formulate principles, to tease out and fight out the best shared way forward, to construct a world rather than merely accumulate commissions. We must replace the complacent relativism of today’s architectural culture with a new confidence in cumulative progress. We must converge around the only paradigm capable of absorbing contemporary complexity and turning it into articulate order. Tectonism is not a style among styles. It is the style that overcomes the exhaustion of styles as arbitrary appearances by restoring style as a design research programme, as a historical project, as a collective civilisational achievement.
This, then, is my manifesto. Architecture must once again become a unified, progressive, self-confident discipline, equal to the complexity of the civilisation it serves. It must abandon the false comfort of pluralism, reclaim the framing of social communication as its proper task, and harness the full computational intelligence of our age to design a productive, empowering and inspiring built environment that facilitates and further advances the next stage of our global civilisation. Tectonism is the name and programme of that ambition made concrete. I declare it the architecture of the 21st century, and I call upon the discipline to make it so.
