One sport I don’t think too much about, living in Colorado, is surfing. For obvious reasons. But, as we travel in the summers, there are so many places we’ve been where it’s a part of the culture and everyone participates. And, it’s great for kids — so challenging, so healthy for mind and body, and so empowering when they do actually stand up for the first time, even if it’s on a baby wave.
Here’s a roundup of some of the best surf camps around (for kids) that I’ve found (and some we’ve experienced personally). Hope it inspires and excites you and your family to try one sometime!
Ericeira, Portugal | Ages 8 - 17
This is hands-down one of the best camps we’ve personally experienced. A weeklong (M-F) overnight drop-off camp for kids, focused on both learning to surf and empowering kids to be confident and emotionally intelligent humans? Count me in. I’ve often hear from other parents “do they have this camp for adults?!” Check out more details here.
Uvita, Costa Rica | Adults + Kids ages 6 - 11
This is a true family camp where everyone can go and learn to surf together. Set on the beaches of the Marino Ballena National Park, near Uvita, Costa Rica, the whole family will have a blast learning to surf, exploring the local beaches, and enjoying delicious local food. I am thinking of signing up for this one… anyone else in?

Marinella, Sardinia, Italy | Ages 7 - 13
This was one of the first camps added to the WanderWorks collection, and is one I’ve been wanting to visit for a while. It combines enriching activities, safety, fun, and some aspect of learning, making it one of the best camps we’ve seen. Buena Lab emphasizes ocean ecology and environmental awareness in all of their camps, so kids not only learn to surf and have fun in the waves, but also to understand the importance of sustainability and ecology. Puerto Escondido, Mexico | Ages 8 - 14
Language, surfing, cooking, art, movies, storytelling, outdoor games… it’s all included in a week of camp at Oasis. This is the camp for you if you’re looking for language and surfing combined; where every kid will learn, have fun, and even do a small presentation at the end of the week on one thing they’ve learned! Moliets, France OR San Vicente de la Barquera, Spain | Ages 14 - 17
Looking for a surf camp for your teenager? Planet Surf Camps have you covered. They offer an amazing weeklong overnight experience, which includes“glamping” on the beach, learning to surf, hanging out outside, playing games, enjoying the ocean breezes and making new friendships.
