I strongly believe there is no perfect chat platform. They are all either not user friendly, don't let you properly own your data, are susceptible to enshittification, hard to moderate communities within, or are insecure. Many have several of those problems.

I think a perfect chat platform would be local-first, decentralized (using keypairs for auth and no home server), multi-user, and use digital locality for its main form of anti-spam moderation. However, for creating things like support rooms for niche games or other projects, digital locality will likely have to be turned off, and use other methods of decentralized moderation to prevent spam or bots from regularly disrupting the chat. Of course, on top of all of this the chat protocol would have to have easy to use software, particularly with ensuring a safe and convenient way to move the keypairs to other devices.
