We had a great time in Washington DC at the Long Live Mags event co-organized by The Society of Publication Designers, Carla Frank Creative, Paper & Dirt and hosted at Steadfast Supply in the Navy Yard. Thanks to Carla - originally from Pittsburgh, now based in Baltimore - for connecting me with Dian and Kojo this winter and making this collaborative event happen. Living Room DC held a collage making workshop for all the creatives to roll up through their sleeves and play with paper.
Students from Maryland Institute College of Art were so eager to touch, feel and smell real magazines. A local graphic designer quietly and meticulously leafed through nearly every magazine on display, commenting “I actually never flip through magazines. This is just so therapeutic.”
In line with SPD’s mission to build community and opportunity for publication designers outside of NYC, my goal is to continue highlighting the resurgence and resilience of print magazines in the wider Mid-Atlantic and Midwest region.

Our Pittsburgh pal, Ross Mantle, had a wonderful three-page spread in the Arts and Leisure section of this past Sunday’s New York Times print edition.
He documented the final iteration of Living Dead Weekend, a weekend celebration of George A. Romero’s cult-classic “Dawn of the Dead” at Monroeville Mall.

Mary Oliver: Saved By The Beauty of the World Screening at Two Frays Brewery (Fall 2026)
From the southeastern suburbs of Cleveland, Mary Oliver is my favorite poet for her love of nature, deep solitude and finding wonder in the everyday.
“Stand them in the stream, head them upstream, rejoice as they learn to love this green space they live in... Attention is the beginning of devotion.”
A Pittsburgh premiere, the documentary screening will be accompanied by readings from local nature writers, both of Mary Oliver’s and their own work.
Stay tuned on the exact date, but it will be on a Thursday night in September or October.
