Virality Is a Terrible Marketing Strategy

Brands still chase viral moments.

A clever post. A chaotic tweet. A video that explodes for two days and racks up a few million views. The numbers look impressive in a screenshot. The social team celebrates. Slack messages fly.

Then something strange happens…Nothing.

No meaningful follower growth. No shift in perception. No one remembers the brand a week later.

Because virality often produces awareness without memory.

A viral post is usually built to maximize reaction.

It’s funny. Shocking. Unexpected. Something people send to a friend with a quick “haha look at this.” It travels quickly because the content itself is entertaining.

But entertainment and brand memory are not the same thing.

When a post goes viral for the wrong reasons, the audience remembers the joke, the twist, or the chaos. The brand that posted it becomes background noise. Millions of views happen, but almost none of that attention converts into long-term interest.

The internet moves too fast for disconnected moments to stack.

This is the uncomfortable truth many marketing teams quietly discover.

You can generate millions of impressions and still have trouble building community.

If the content could have come from any account on the internet, the audience won’t associate it with you. It becomes another floating piece of content in an endless feed. Entertaining for a few seconds. Then gone.

Virality optimizes for reach.

Brand building requires recognition.

Those are very different goals.

Instead of chasing moments, the most interesting brands are building worlds, not traditional storytelling…something closer to lore.

Lore is what happens when a brand’s voice, visuals, references, and recurring ideas start to connect over time - those pieces form a small universe that people recognize immediately.

You see a post and think:

“Oh, this is so them.”

The content stops feeling random and starts feeling like part of something larger.

The strongest internet brands create a sense of participation. You notice recurring aesthetic choices. Maybe it’s the lighting. Maybe it’s the slightly chaotic editing style. Maybe it’s the way captions are written or the references that keep appearing.

People who follow the brand understand them immediately. New viewers sense that there’s a deeper layer they haven’t fully seen yet. That tension creates curiosity.

Ask a simple question: If someone sent your post to a friend, how would they describe it?

Would they say:

“This brand posted something funny.”

Or would they say:

“This is exactly the kind of thing they would post.”

That difference matters, because the goal of marketing isn’t to create the loudest moment, it’s to create recognizable presence.
