A Week in My Reading Life

Kuleigh Baker · Overbooked Mama

People often ask me how I manage to read so many books in a year, and the truth might surprise you: I never read for long stretches at a time. I'm not a morning reader. I rarely sneak in pages during my lunch break, and my reading life is built almost entirely around a fairly consistent nighttime reading habit. I typically finish 1 to 3 books a week. If I’m able to listen to audiobooks during the week, I can listen to one every 2 to 3 days, depending on the length. That leaves one physical book or Kindle book to read at night. I love getting a peek into the lives of other readers— especially moms with careers outside the home! Reading is a relaxing hobby, not my job. Some weeks, I read a lot. Other weeks, I prioritize TV time with my husband, or we are busy with a lot of family events to attend.

This week was the perfect week to capture my progress. I finished reading a book Sunday night and went into Monday morning with a blank slate. I feel like that rarely happens. I always seem to be between multiple books!

I love sharing these reading-week diaries with you because they’re honest. This is not a highlight reel of the “perfect” reading life, but a real look at how reading for fun can actually fit into a full work week. Despite starting with the best of intentions, there were several days my books stayed closed (which is unlike me). If you’ve ever felt a little guilty about a slow reading week, I hope this recap is a relief to read.
