Roughly four in ten cancers trace back to things you can change. That number is real, it is large, and it is the most genuinely hopeful fact in cancer research. It also gets buried under a much more dramatic story, and the dramatic story is the one that hurts people.

A viral thread going around lists ten “truths” from two researchers, opening with “most cancer is preventable.” Some of what follows is true and worth knowing. Some of it is a hypothesis stated as settled fact. And one part of it tells cancer patients to refuse the treatment most likely to save them. I am going to separate those, because the useful core is worth having and the dangerous parts are worth naming.

Here is what holds up, what is oversold, and the claim I want you to walk away certain is wrong.

A large share of cancer risk is genuinely in your hands. That is true without a single conspiracy attached to it.

Send that to whoever thinks cancer is pure bad luck.

Start with the claim that survives cleanly. A large share of cancer is linked to modifiable factors.

The World Health Organization’s cancer agency estimates that around 40 percent of cancers are attributable to preventable causes. A 2026 global analysis put it at 37.8 percent of new cases, roughly 7.1 million cancers a year, tied to modifiable risk factors (global cancer burden from modifiable risks — Nature Medicine). An American Cancer Society study found 40 percent of US cases and about half of cancer deaths linked to the same (modifiable risk factors and US cancer — American Cancer Society).

The factors themselves are not exotic. Smoking is by far the largest, tied to about 20 percent of all cases on its own. Then excess body weight, alcohol, UV exposure, physical inactivity, and a set of infections like HPV and H. pylori that vaccines and treatment can address.

So the thread’s prevention list, eat mostly whole food, move regularly, sleep, manage stress, cut smoking and alcohol, is genuinely sound. That is real, evidence-backed, empowering, and it needs no theory of hidden truth to be true. If the thread stopped here, it would be a good thread.

One small correction before we go further, because precision is the difference between honest and hyped.

The thread says “most cancer is preventable.” The evidence says a large share, around 40 percent, not most. That gap is not pedantry. The other 60 percent includes cancers driven by inherited genes, random cell-division errors, and causes we do not yet understand or cannot change.

Why does this matter? Because “most cancer is preventable” quietly implies that people who get cancer did something wrong. They mostly did not. A lot of cancer arrives through no failure of diet or willpower at all. Overstating prevention turns a hopeful fact into a stick to beat patients with, and that is the opposite of the point.

Now the harder part. The thread’s spine is the idea that cancer is fundamentally a metabolic disease of damaged mitochondria, that gene mutations come afterward, and that cancer cells are trapped on sugar and glutamine and can be starved out.

Here is the honest status. There is real science underneath this. …
