Hey friends,
Quick update on what I’ve been heads-down on the last few weeks. A lot of it is shipping, some of it is preparing to speak, and some of it is reacting to feedback from real merchants in the wild.
Let’s get into it.
The native iOS port of Cashu.me is moving fast. Asmogo did the heavy lifting to get the initial Swift build off the ground (you can follow along on GitHub), and my redesign got merged in earlier this month.
I’ve gone back through Asmogo’s PRs and applied a bunch of default iOS Swift stylings across the app. The goal is simple: every basic interaction, navigation, bottom sheets, buttons, should feel native to iOS. Not a port that kinda feels like an iOS app, but one that actually follows Swift best practices out of the box. There’s still polish to do but the base is starting to feel right.
I just got back from Bitcoin ++ Nevada where I ran two days of live, on-the-ground testing with Numo. I was selling hats with really spotty wifi.
Being on the other side of the counter shines a light on things you’ll never find sitting at your desk. Here’s what I’m planning to ship asap based on what I saw and felt.
The wifi failed constantly, and people kept saying they’d come back later to finish paying. I ended up with a long list of pending items cluttering activity. We should hide pending payments by default, but since LN payments can sometimes get stuck for minutes or even hours, the user needs a way to pull up previously generated invoices. This fix accounts for both.
Fix: PR #300
People kept asking me which hat was selling best, and I had no fast way to check. I’m working on a quick way to show money in, total sales, and a summary of items sold. A quick at a glance summary of sales activity.
When you only have a few items in your catalog (we had 4), the current list leaves a lot of unused white space. A tile layout would let merchants with small catalogs make better use of the screen.
It’s only reachable by tapping the receipt button in transaction details, which is one tap too many. Transaction details should have everything you need about a transaction, with a “print receipt” button right there.
Don’t let perfection be the reason you don’t ship. But once you ship, get out there and watch people use it or be the user. We’re also organizing more in person merchant testing sessions for Bitcoin++ Vienna. If you’re going and want to be a part of this let me know.
Next week I’ll be speaking on two panels at The Bitcoin Conference.
If you’re around, come say hi.
I pushed a big update to SL Tracker, my Stockholm public transit app. It now supports every mode of transit in Stockholm. Metro, bus, tram, train, ferry. Running the whole network now.
The latest build is on TestFlight. Once I’m back from this stretch of travel I’ll start the App Store submission process and do a proper launch.
It was my first Swift project and I had a lot of fun with it. I’m hoping it’s useful for a few people.
I want to use the rest of this post to raise awareness about an initiative I was recently told about: No Tech For Apartheid.
There’s also a European chapter, No Tech For Apartheid Europe, which expands the campaign’s reach and broadens the scope to the militarization of technology. Since I live in Europe, this is the chapter I’m paying attention to.
A line from their mission statement that stuck with me:
…we believe to reclaim tech means to unionise tech workers. It means to actively develop a collective conscience, to build community and to practice empathy and integrity.
If you build in this space take a few minutes to read their mission statement. Then think deeply about what role you want to play.
Your soul is in your keeping alone. You can just do things. Take the white pill.
See you,
Erik
