John Vandivier · Optimality

This publication or newsletter documents my ongoing journey of studying markets, developing trading strategies, and attempting to generate returns through investing, business creation, side projects, career moves, and possibly other means. It combines educational discussion, analytical exploration, and transparency about how I personally approach markets.

Because financial content on the internet can sometimes blur the line between education, analysis, and advice, I want to explain clearly how this newsletter is structured and what readers should expect from it.

tldr: Nothing I share on this blog is personalized financial advice for you. I don’t know your situation, risk tolerance, goals, preferences, timeline, constraints, etc.

The primary purpose of this publication is to:

  • Educate you and perhaps entertain you

    • With educational insights about investing and trading

    • Through a combination of anecdotes, theory, specific trade ideas, general frameworks, and concrete analysis

    • Potentially incorporating current news and events

    • Potentially covering non-investment concepts related to my financial journey such as budgeting, side projects, health management, and career management

  • Help me remember my own lessons and reinforce those lessons into myself by teaching and writing

The final section of this article includes a directory of articles in the Road to $1M publication series. The directory is meant to be useful, not guaranteed to be up to date or exhaustive. The current article makes lots of disclaimers which are intended for the entire publication, including but not limited to the articles in that directory.

Some of the articles in the publication are relatively polished with careful wording, analysis, and appropriate nuance. Others take the form of quick updates or stream-of-consciousness notes.

Articles might have errors in math or wording. Articles may contain actual or hypothetical portfolio descriptions, trades, and trade ideas. Regardless of format or wording, no content in this publication is specific advice for you.

Focus on learning the reasoning behind my analytical conclusions and the actions I take so that you can apply them to your own situation.

At times, I may disclose:

  • Portions of my personal portfolio

  • Position sizing approaches I personally use

  • Historical changes in my portfolio over time

  • Trades I have executed (reported after the fact)

  • Hypothetical or conceptual portfolios used for explanation

For example, I may describe how I personally size trades within my own portfolio. Using specific numbers can help me clearly illustrate what I mean when I say that I consider some trade lower or higher risk than another.

Mathematical magnitudes and specific disclosures are practically and conceptually important for clear communication, precision, education, and my own transparency, credibility, and accountability.

These disclosures should not be interpreted as advice, instructions, or recommendations. Every investor has a unique financial situation, risk tolerance, investment horizon, and set of constraints.

Further, as a practical matter, the time and price context in which you read my content will almost always be different than the context in which I made a disclosure. Therefore, regardless of intent, it is actually impossible for you to copy my concrete trades.

So practically, if you even try to do that, you have missed the point and purpose of the article and publication. Reconsider the message with a greater focus on abstracting and adapting the information to your situation, rather than making an exact or woodenly literal copy.

This newsletter may occasionally include:

  • Trade ideas, post hoc reports, or market hypotheses relating to current events, general economic education, or specific investing frameworks

  • Price analysis, price theory, and asset analysis

  • Asset or position accumulation, entry, and exit techniques

  • Confirmation, invalidation, and risk management techniques for trades, trends, ideas, positions, and targets

None of this content should be interpreted as a recommendation for you to buy, sell, or hold any particular security.

These discussions are intended to illustrate how I think about markets and trading decisions, not to provide instructions for readers to follow.

Notably: This publication does not provide real-time trade alerts.

The structural model for this newsletter is inspired by long-standing financial publications such as The Motley Fool, which publish investment analysis, research, and commentary in newsletter form.

Publications like these demonstrate that investment commentary, research, and discussion can exist as editorial content rather than personalized advisory services.

The distinction between financial publishing and regulated investment advisory services has been discussed in U.S. law, including the Supreme Court case Lowe v. SEC, which addressed how general investment publications can operate independently from personalized investment advisory relationships.

My intent in structuring this newsletter is to follow a publication-oriented model focused on commentary, research, and transparency.

Notably, The Motley Fool even has a paid service called Motley Fool Stock Advisor which is not legally considered financial advice as far as I understand. The only reason I bring that up is to firmly emphasize how something might look like advice in common language, but it is still not intended as formal financial advice in a regulatory or legal sense.

  1. No content published here is intended as financial advice or instruction.

  2. Readers should always conduct their own research and, when appropriate, consult with qualified financial professionals before making investment decisions.

  3. I am not a lawyer nor a tax professional. Any legal claims or tax-related claims made in this publication reflect my personal understanding, opinion, or interpretation as someone who is not an expert or professional in the area. Nothing I say should be interpreted as legal advice.

  4. I am not a medical professional. Any content related to physical or mental wellbeing and health is a matter of my opinion, not medical advice or prescription.

  5. Content may contain errors and typos. Do your own research and when in doubt, seek a qualified professional in the relevant domain.

This is a log-style article jotting down notes from my LinkedIn as I live out this journey and experiment. The current series will be a mix of such log-style articles and other more reflective pieces. The reflective pieces will come at the cost of being more distant from actual trades that I’m making.
