Metacognition -- the human brain's ability to think about what you're thinking about -- is a really fascinating and really emerging and studied branch of neuroscience.

I had an epiphany a few years ago while checking out at the (American*) grocery store.

When we introduce a new baby to the family, our kids might hear a lot of the following (from us, or from family members, or from well-meaning well-wishers):

My daughter has coily, curly hair that I braid in protective braids every four weeks or so.

Some of us come from backgrounds that were harsher and stricter than we want to be with our kids.
