I want you to think about why we chose to follow trends in the first place. Just so we don’t think it’s an inherently bad or great thing. Trends can serve as inspiration, and very often serve as a way of fitting in (how many times have you forced yourself into an outfit that does nothing for you because it’s ‘ trendy’).
But when it comes to expressing who you are there is a line between being told what to like versus finding the things that ignite something in you.
Or even thing about a time where you have followed a trend, absolutely loved it, only for it to go out of style but you think ‘fuck it, I’m too attached and this is me’. Here is a good representation where a trend is something that is also deeply you.
So we all know that we choose to follow trends is to fit in, be liked and have others feel like we are on trend. The down side is that going by this criteria to be liked, we would have to adhere to this forever. Always be on, always follow and keep up, even when that thing is not really you.
But now we are living in a time where trends seem to be taking over, and thanks to the algorithm we struggle to see past what we have been engaging with. You are being fed them and not really discovering them. And everything is a trend now. Your morning routine, style, what you eat, your coffee order, your personality type, how you speak, and what exercise you do.
Even business branding has become a trend and I am the first to put my hand up and say that I fall for these trends on social media all the time for my business account. I ask myself all the time, how much of this is my style just because I like it versus because its everywhere? And if I did something really off centre, would it stand out or get drowned out?
