I’m back from a lovely few days in the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. As Northwoods as you can get in Michigan. What an absolute joy. Of course gasoline jumped in price during that long drive north but you know what? Totally worth it.
I took SO many beautiful reference photos of not only landscapes but lovely little moments on the shorelines and forests. I am simply captivated by freshwater streams, rain drops, rocks and the lovely lichen and moss that’s everywhere.
Don’t forget, this coming Friday, I’m leading a watercolor workshop for Huron Pines at one of their beautiful waterfront preserves. Everything is provided, there’s no charge and you’ll have a great time! You do need to register though so please register if you haven’t yet.
Labor Day’s Art in the Park in Port Austin, Michigan remains as my final outdoor show of the season. I’m also planning for the Chippewa Nature Center’s Nature Art Show and sale in early December which will be the last show of the year.
With a lot of miles under the wheels this past week, I didn’t paint much. I did sketch out a new piece before I left and managed to nearly finish it when I got home.
Inspired by my Blackberry Mouse painting, this one took a turn toward fall after a stretch of cool nights and seeing my dad’s growing pumpkin patch. So... Pumpkin Mouse seems like the obvious title.
Is it a series when there are only two paintings? Probably not. But I’m famous for making two or three of something and then wandering off to the next idea. The raccoon and opossum faces. The “Talking To” pieces with the crow, raccoon, and fox. My ideas tend to grab hold, shake me around for a while, and then quietly move on. Honestly, I’m perfectly happy with that arrangement.
This little painting is packed with tiny details. A mouse, a moth, a spider, and a katydid all share the pumpkin patch beneath an August fingernail moon. It’s almost finished, and now I’m wondering if I can get it scanned and framed in time for Art in the Park over Labor Day weekend.
