This week’s Nanos Review focused on Canadians’ views on trade, cross-border relations and emerging technologies. The findings suggest broad support for maintaining economic ties with the United States, alongside specific priorities related to trade negotiations and government investment.
Research conducted with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs found that Canadians view free trade in North America as important to the national economy but were reticent on Canadian concessions. At the same time, polling conducted for CTV News found that illegal firearm trafficking ranks as a high priority for Canadians in discussions with the United States, with nine in ten identifying it as an important trade negotiation issue.
Another survey for CTV examined views on the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Most Canadians opposed re-negotiating the existing agreement, while fewer supported reopening the deal.
Opinion on artificial intelligence remains more mixed. Research conducted for The Globe and Mail found Canadians divided on whether AI will deliver more benefits than risks over time. However, there was greater agreement on the question of public investment, with more Canadians opposing government subsidies for AI data centres than supporting them.
