Canadian consumer confidence was largely unchanged in early August, according to the latest Bloomberg-Nanos Canadian Confidence Index. The index stood at 53.0, compared with 52.65 four weeks earlier and 52.81 the previous week. The reading remains above the neutral threshold of 50, indicating that positive assessments continue to slightly outweigh negative ones.

Changes in the underlying measures were similarly limited. The Pocketbook Index, which captures views on personal finances and job security, was 54.7 compared with 54.2 four weeks ago. The Expectations Index, measuring perceptions of the economy and housing market, registered 51.3, compared with 51.1 four weeks earlier. Both indicators remained in positive territory, but showed little movement over the period.

The longer-term picture suggests that economic sentiment has been relatively stable in recent months. The overall index remains below its historical average of 54.71, though above the 2026 average of 50.94. Levels recorded this week are also within the range observed throughout much of the past year.

Among the components of the index, job security continues to register as the strongest measure, while perceptions of personal finances and the broader economy are more mixed. Expectations for real estate values were somewhat higher than four weeks ago, although the overall pattern across the indicators points more to stability than to a material change in sentiment.

Overall, the latest results suggest that Canadian economic mood was broadly unchanged over the past month, with only modest variation across the key measures of household and economic confidence.

The BNCCI is produced by the Nanos Research Corporation, headquartered in Canada, which operates in Canada and the United States. The data is based on

random telephone interviews with 1,000 Canadian consumers (land- and cell-lines), using a four week rolling average of 250 respondents each week, 18 years of age and over. The random sample of 1,000 respondents may be weighted using the latest census information for Canada.

The interviews are compiled into a four week rolling average of 1,000 interviews where each week, the oldest group of 250 interviews is dropped and a new group of 250 interviews is added. The views of 1,000 respondents are compiled into a diffusion index from 0 to 100. A score of 50 on the diffusion index indicates that positive and negative views are a wash while scores above 50 suggest net positive views, while those below 50 suggest net negative views in terms of the economic mood of Canadians.

A random telephone survey of 1,038 consumers in Canada is accurate 3.1 percentage points, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20. This report is based on the four waves of tracking ending August 7, 2026.
