There’s something funny about motherhood.
The longer you do it, the less the holiday becomes about stuff… and the more it becomes about feeling.
Feeling seen.
Feeling appreciated.
Feeling rested.
Feeling like maybe—just maybe—you don’t have to carry every single thing for one day.
And I think a lot of women struggle to articulate what they actually want because most moms have become experts at saying:
“Oh, I don’t need anything.”
When really what we mean is:
I want someone else to plan dinner.
I want to drink my coffee while it’s still hot.
I want a little space to hear myself think again.
I want to feel like me outside of everyone needing something from me.
I want acknowledgment for the invisible things I carry every day.
Not in a dramatic way.
Just in an honest way.
Because motherhood is beautiful… but it’s also mentally loud.
And maybe the older I get, the more I realize Mother’s Day isn’t actually about perfection or expensive gifts. It’s about thoughtfulness. Presence. Being known.
The best gifts are usually the ones that say:
“I see who you are beneath all the roles you play.”
Not universally, of course. But if I had to guess what most women are craving right now, it would probably look something like this:
An uninterrupted morning.
A walk alone.
A massage.
A slow coffee outside.
A hotel night.
A Target trip without being needed every 12 seconds.
The emotional labor is exhausting.
The planning.
The remembering.
The mental tabs constantly open.
Sometimes the sexiest thing a partner can say is:
“Don’t worry, I already handled it.”
The appointments.
The lunches.
The worrying.
The noticing when everyone else is off.
The emotional temperature-taking moms do all day long.
So much of motherhood happens in the background where no one claps for you.
I think this one matters more than we talk about.
A lot of women are trying to reconnect with themselves again in this season of life.
Their style. Their confidence. Their health. Their ambition. Their joy.
Not because they’re ungrateful for motherhood—
but because they’re human beings too.
And honestly?
I think part of becoming a better mother is allowing yourself to remain a full person.
Not just random panic-bought flowers at 8pm the night before.
Massage or facial gift card
House cleaning service
A solo hotel staycation
Cozy pajamas + a book - love these pjs from Negative
Morning to herself with no obligations
High-quality walking shoes - some of my faves are Brooks and OnCloud
Pilates/yoga membership
Fancy protein powder or matcha she won’t buy herself - been loving Ancient Nutrition Vanilla lately
Sauna/spa day
Cute workout set that makes her feel good - Love Vuori
A beautiful journal
A class she’s talked about taking
A weekend trip
A new fragrance - I found this one at a boutique and LOVE it…Boyfriend
A framed photo of her doing something she loves—not just photos of the kids
A handwritten letter or art - always love getting things like this from the kids
Voice memos from the kids
Printed family photos (because we never print them anymore)
A memory book
A video compilation from family/friends telling her what she means to them
She probably means:
“I don’t want to plan it.”
So plan something thoughtful.
That’s the gift.
You do not have to earn rest.
You do not have to prove your worth through exhaustion.
And you are allowed to want more for yourself while still deeply loving your family.
Those things can exist together.
To the moms in the thick of it…
the moms with grown kids…
the moms navigating grief, distance, complicated relationships, or missing their own mothers this weekend…
I hope you feel seen.
And I hope at some point this weekend, you get a moment that feels like yours again.
Happy Mother’s Day 🤍
