NEWPORT, R.I. — A Newport police officer was wounded and a suspect killed Wednesday morning after an investigation into a potentially stolen sailboat erupted in gunfire in Newport Harbor, authorities said.
The incident began Tuesday when the Newport Harbormaster’s Office was contacted by a private party from New Jersey reporting a stolen sailing vessel and asking officials to be on the lookout if it entered Newport waters. Similar alerts were reportedly sent to other harbors in the region.
Shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday, a Newport harbormaster spotted a vessel matching the description anchored in the North Anchorage.
