NEWPORT, R.I. — The Newport police officer shot during Wednesday morning’s deadly encounter aboard a sailboat in Newport Harbor has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, police announced Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities also identified the suspect killed in the shooting as Brendan Norris, 27, of Newport.
The incident began after authorities investigated a sailboat matching the description of a potentially stolen vessel in Newport’s North Anchorage. Police said officers approached the vessel and encountered Norris on the bow before he fled below deck despite officers’ commands.
