US Initial Jobless Claims Aug 13: 206K (est 210K; prev 209K; prev R 212K)
Continuing Claims Aug 8: 1799K (est 1788K; 1777K; prev R 1781K)

After hitting the joint-lowest since 1969 four weeks ago at 189k, initial jobless claims have edged higher but very moderately, in the week through August 15th -6k to 206k (from revised 212k the prior week), remaining historically low and in their relatively narrow range since November 2021.

The four-week average rose +4.25k to 204k (~-21.5k y/y), just off the least since October 2022.

Continuing claims (SA) in the week through August 8th (1-week lagged) rose +18k to 1.799mn (after a +4k revision to the prior week), remaining in their range since mid-2023 (~1.75mn to 2.0mn) also historically low (but not as low as initial claims).

We also saw the four week avg of continuing claims edge up +2.5k to 1.789mn, though remaining lower y/y for a 28th straight week -160.5k, the most since December 2022, evidencing that while workers may be having a harder time finding a new job, the deterioration in that metric has for now reversed.

The 20yr pre-pandemic avg for initial claims is 345k & continuing claims ~2.9mn.
