Happy 250th Bday, United States of America. Happy 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This is something that all peoples of all political persuasions, nationalities, races, and religions should be able to celebrate. Even Royalist Brits, even Americans who have ex-patriated due to Trump, and even the peoples of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran who have suffered under unjust American foreign policy actions towards their country.
The ideals of the founders were just, noble, unique, and have shaped all of human history. The Founders were Mega-Orderers. They cannot be held responsible for the mistakes of those who came after them. The principles of America were truly just and revolutionary for its time and for all times— 3/5ths compromise and the Electoral College not with standing.
And the founders loved experts, truly loved appointing them even if they had different politics. Washington appointed Hamilton and Madison/Jefferson, fully understanding that they had opposite views of the relationship of the States and the Federal government. He valued them as experts. The founders drew on every sort of professional to bring their top skills to building the new nation.
Yes some of the founders had a libertarian streak, but they loved loved expert guidance, and freedom and integrity and principle. How Washington did not want to be President and then did not want to serve for life and wished to limit his own power by core principles was unique in human history.
Thanks for reading Ordering the Disorder! This post is public so feel free to share it.
As King George III reportedly said when he learned that George Washington intended to resign his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and return to private life: 'If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.'
I will go one further, it is not clear that he is not the greatest man who has ever lived. Because declining absolute power and taking on personal sacrifice and hardships to set a precedent for others is not what the conquers or revolutionary heroes of history — Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Stalin, Nasser, Bolivar— have ever done. What Washington did was truly unique.
We should study his life. His flaws (like slavery, crafting the narrative post 1754 about what happened in the Ohio country, and hyper disciplining his men) and we should embrace his virtues and his legacy. If we could only have men like Washington running the US, UK, and EU today, the world would be a far better place.
I think you will enjoy the YouTube videos I have shot below on this theme..
And happy fourth to one and all
