Note: We are not against quarries. We are just against this quarry given the location adjacent to two NC State Park entities and given the 100-ish years of planning for the land (Odd Fellows) to be a part of Umstead State Park. While there is a small environmental component to this issue, this issue is for sure NOT a “Not In My Back Yard” (NIMBY) issue. This issue is mostly (say 95%) an issue of manipulation of public policy, public property, and public plans by politically connected people and businesses. This is an issue of wealthy and politically connected companies and people taking advantage of the State’s slow process of acquiring park land and the State’s limited financial resources and using their power and positions to circumvent public plans, public interest, and public policy in increments so small that they seem like they are doing nothing wrong.
