Where is the "ME-Time?"

I took a class this weekend and pondered what’s different about taking an in-person class versus figuring things out on your own or through YouTube? Mainly it is that you have expert help to guide you. A good teacher has been through the paces, stumbled along the way and figure out the method that works consistently. Taking a class is like a short-cut to understanding the process.

The other thing about taking an “in-person” class is the comradery. You’re with fellow “newbies” and have an opportunity to learn by watching them as well. Everyone has a different take on what they discovered during the instructions. Some struggle more, others have an immediate knack for the skill. For me, I walked out of my class on Saturday feeling energized and ready to play with the technique. I learned a lot and have yet, another tool in my toolbox to create.

During the class, I became aware that so many women feel restricted from creating. There are so many other “obligations” we need to attend to (the house, the family, the job, the laundry, etc). Is there really any time left in the day to create? Shouldn’t we find more productive things to do? Put our families needs before our own?

But, I ask: “where is the ME-Time!”

Our creativity is a gift to ourselves. I personally have projects throughout the house ready to pick up with a moments notice. The time I spend creating is like meditation; an escape from reality or even just time to let my brain rest. There are moments in my day that I feel like I’m just stumbling over myself knocking yet one more thing from my to-do list. My brain moves from one moment/one task to the next without any awareness to my present state of being. How am I feeling? Am I present in the moment?

Working on a project centers me, slows me down and I’m aware of my thoughts and feelings. I can think about other things and process my ideas or completely escape into the stitch tuning out the rest of the world. When I’m creating it is about me and we all deserve more time for that!
