Clare Green · Nameberry of the Day

Constantine is a venerable Roman name, with soft sounds but full of gravitas.

The name of a Roman emperor — Constantine the Great, who legalized all religions in the empire and converted to Christianity — it is widely used in central and eastern Europe, in various forms. Both Constantin and Konstantin are Top 100 boy names in Germany and Austria.

To English speakers, it may appear long and elaborate… until you remember that the top boy names are teeming with three-syllable (and longer) names, many also from antiquity. Theodore, Sebastian, Alexander, Maximus, Atticus… yep, they’re great company for Constantine.

There is no go-to nickname, but options include Con, Stan, or even Gus (sometimes used for the Greek version, Konstantinos).
