Leonie Dawson has some beautiful workbooks and magical courses to help clarify your goals and document your thoughts via a very creative process. Plus now has her own Substack.
Just go to the self-help section of any bookstore or your local library and you will find plenty of authors ready to teach about setting goals to create your ‘dream life’. I am certainly no expert but I do believe in the power of mastering your mindset and manifesting ideas in order to transform your future.
Most people don’t even think about goals, let alone write them down, review them (hint: this is the secret sauce) or take action to move forward. If we know we need them to have any chance of reaching our dreams, why aren’t we just bloody doing it?
There are number of problems:
we don’t know what the hell we truly desire
the old self sabotage trick or imposter syndrome
we don’t understand what is actually required to achieve our goals.
Let’s look at each over next few newsletter posts.

Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I wanna (Hey), I wanna (Hey), I wanna (Hey), I wanna (Hey)
I wanna really, really, really wanna "zig-a-zig", ah!
It is easy to focus on what is going wrong and what we DON’T want. Too easy to complain to anyone that will listen about life’s problems, issues with our partner, the narcissistic boss or the world in chaos around us. But ask a friend (or yourself for that matter) what they really want to achieve in life, they will be at loss to answer.
It takes a lot of effort, self reflection or visualisation to think about what we really want our dream life to look like. We are so busy ‘just living’ - doing what we are supposed to do, meeting the expectation of others and following the old classic rule book. Our clarity gets blurry and we get lost along the way.
STOP focusing on what is wrong. Sh*t happens in life and we just have to deal with each little problem as it presents (For more on this topic - check out Ryan Holiday and his book The Obstacle is the Way).
It is worth a try to set some goals (bigger the better) and have a good crack at trying to achieve them. Even if it takes a lifetime. You might surprise yourself.
So it is time for quiet self reflection. Don’t rush it. Be patient. It has taken a long time to lose touch with what you want out of life; so don’t expect it to just leap out like a blinding light.
Start writing some notes of your thoughts.
Think back to your childhood and your favourite activities. What did you dream about especially during play time?
What are your true passions or desires?
What activity, tasks or hobbies that make you go into a state of ‘flow’?
Ask close friends, family or colleagues what they think you are good at (and your weaknesses too).
What makes you feel abundant, joyous, happy and grateful?
What makes you feel like a better person and a human being (not a human doing)?
What would you be willing to do without pay?
A very powerful exercise is to write your own eulogy. Writing down how you want to be remembered can be a surprising and humbling experience.
Consider what would be the one big regret you don’t want on your death bed. Recommended reading: Taking Stock by Dr Jordan Grumet (aka Doc G) or The Top Five Regrets of the Dying by Bronnie Ware.
Part 2 and 3 will be explored over next few posts. No go do your homework and stayed tuned.
As a starting point, use a daily mantra or mediation that encourages you to gain clarity around what you want in life. Something like:
‘Day by day, I am getting clearer and gaining more confidence around my goals and purpose in life.’
Write it down and say it to yourself daily, as often as you can remember.
WARNING:
If you start any of these exercises, your mind is bound to try to talk you out of it. Your inner voice will be ruthless about the futility or absurdity of your efforts.
When it does, say ‘thank you for helping to protect me’. Then tell it to shut up and go away!
Only needs to make a few small changes, take action, move to next step, another small change, take action….. rinse and repeat.
