Surviving the Friendship Circle

SPIDERMAN🕸️ · SPIDERMAN🕸️

Let's look at the actual mathematics of a Kigali friend group: it is not a brotherhood. It is a high-stakes, low-margin corporate enterprise disguised as a late-night WhatsApp linkup. You cannot even step outside to grab an iced latte at Kivu Noir without running into three people who view your presence entirely as a strategic networking opportunity.

But as a guy navigating this social maze from the inside, the real crime isn't even the exhausting performance art of looking like an influencer. It is watching how smoothly our day-ones manipulate us into working unpaid emotional overtime and funding tables for people who want the executive experience on a minimum-wage effort. A modern Kigali inner circle operates like an underfunded startup where you are the sole investor, the free public relations manager, and the emergency financial safety net. We are all trying to survive our landlords, yet our circles expect us to act like we own the commercial real estate in Heights

The High-Value Demander (The One-Way Motion)

We have all been there. A snap notification hits your phone on a Friday afternoon: "Where are we linking up tonight?" You check your bank app, see that your balance is holding on for dear life, but you agree because you don't want to be the "boring friend."

The manipulation starts the second the itinerary is chosen. This friend doesn’t have a car, doesn't have a stable MoMo balance, and hasn't bought a round of drinks since 2024. Yet, they are the loudest person when it comes to picking the venue. They want the low-lit cocktail lounge in Kiyovu. They want the table with the prime view. They want the aesthetic.

When you arrive, the performance art begins. They order the premium cocktails and the extra platters of wings, acting like the master of ceremonies. But the moment the waiter arrives with the white thermal receipt on that little plastic tray, their entire energy shifts. Suddenly, their bank app is "acting up." Or they drop the ultimate line: "Hey bro, my MoMo is jammed, just clear this I’ll send it to you tomorrow."

Tomorrow never comes , only receipts do. You swipe your card, knowing damn well this single evening just liquidated your transport budget for the next two weeks. You are literally funding a lifestyle for someone who pays you back exclusively in "thanks for the vibes, bro."

The "Ghost When Safe" Protocol (The Part-Time Friend)

If they aren’t draining your wallet, they are treating your phone number like a free crisis helpline. This is the friend who only remembers you exist when their life is falling apart, they need a favor, or they are completely single.

When they are going through a rough patch or stuck in a dry talking stage, they are permanently in your notifications, dragging you out for coffee, and calling you their "anchor." The second they get into a relationship or find a new link with actual motion, they vanish completely from the grid.

You won't hear a single word from them for three months until their situationship inevitably crashes, and they slide back into your chat like they never left. You aren’t a friend , you’re a temporary emotional shelter with no lease agreement.

The HG/HB Saga (The Friendship License)

The financial drainage is bad, but the psychological warfare of the Homegirl and Homeboy sagas is where the real exhaustion sets in. This is that toxic, hyper-confusing grey area where you are sharing full relationship intimacy, doing couples' logistics, and holding late-night yapping sessions, but the second someone asks, they hide behind the "just friends" defense.

It’s essentially a full relationship under a corporate friendship license. You do everything a real couple does. You know their coffee order, you text good morning and good night, and you hold them down when they are stressed. You are working a full-time emotional shift, providing the security, the attention, and the loyalty of a partner. You are essentially a boyfriend in all but name.

The moment you try to lean into that intimacy or look for consistency, the trap snaps shut. They pull out the ultimate Kigali contract clause: "But you’re my Homeboy, I don’t want to ruin what we have."

You’re not a partner  you’re a placeholder with benefits.

The Borrowed Motion Illusion (The Asset Exploitation)

If they aren’t draining your emotions, they are actively draining your wardrobe and your garage. This is the friend who builds their entire personality, clothes, and romantic prospects by borrowing your assets to farm aura.

He asks to borrow your car for a "quick errand," but you see him driving it past a café in Kiyovu at 2:00 PM with a girl in the passenger seat. He uses your sneakers, wears your jacket, and relies on your presence to look important in front of people he’s trying to impress.

He’s living like an influencer on your subscription plan.

The Snapchat Cold War (The Secret Demotion)

The internal politics of the circle get even more sinister when the digital architecture changes. You notice the main chat group has been dead for three days. No memes, no planning for the weekend, completely silent.

Then Saturday night hits. You open Snapchat, and you see your homeboys posting matching private stories from the exact same lounge in Kimihurura. You are left sitting at home on your couch, staring at your screen, realizing a smaller, secret group chat has been created entirely without you.

They didn't exclude you because they don't like you; they excluded you because your budget didn't match the "executive vision" of their weekend plan. You’ve been soft-demoted  not for vibes, but for financial performance.

The Nonchalant Empathy Deficit (The Phone Over Feelings)

When you finally do get a seat at the table, you realize that looking completely unbothered is the ultimate currency, even when you are going through real-life trauma.

You finally decide to open up because you are genuinely stressed about your job, your finances, or a family issue. You think your day-ones will hold you down. Instead, your homeboy checks his phone, shrugs, and drops a generic line like, "Man, that’s crazy... anyway, did you see what Flex posted on his story?"

Your pain doesn’t ruin the vibe it ruins their aesthetic.

The Superiority Trap (The Ego Pedestal)

This is where the real manipulation of the Kigali friendship scene happens. Dudes in this town have figured out a golden rule: if you make a guy feel like he is the anchor of the group, he becomes incredibly easy to exploit.

This friend will shower you with a very specific type of praise to keep you in your role as the provider. They will tell the group, "Bro, Flex is the most reliable guy in this city. He always holds the mandem down. He’s the only one who actually gets the vision."

This line is lethal. It appeals directly to your ego. The moment you accept the compliment, you think, "I am the anchor of this group. I am the mature one." Once you are up on that pedestal, the trap snaps shut.

Compliments here aren’t free  they’re collateral for exploitation.

The Verdict: The Ride Home Realization

This is where the sarcasm stops and the actual ache begins. The ultimate climax of the weekend happens on the moto or Move car ride home.

The alcohol fades, the social hype dies down, and the silence of the Kigali streetlights hits you like a truck. You are sitting there looking out at the road, realizing you are spending money you don't have and energy you can’t spare to maintain an identity you don't even like, just to keep the validation of a group that only loves the version of you that can afford the table.

Girls have realized that if they want actual funding for their lifestyle, they have to skip our generation entirely. While you are busy sharing your curated Spotify playlist to impress your Homegirl, someone’s uncle is already sharing bank details directly over Snapchat. We are literally competing with the men who pay our family rent.

You aren't a friend to them. You are an unpaid emotional placeholder and a financial safety net. They use you to keep themselves warm and validated until the lifestyle or the sponsor they actually want comes along.

Friendship here isn’t free. It’s an unpaid internship where the only salary is aesthetic noise. Stop funding vibes. Start funding peace.
