This is another intriguing glimpse into the business of selling computers — 35 years ago. Written some time in 1991, it shows how the quirkiness and iconoclasm of the 1980s personal computer scene was already fading into the past.
It was the era of the PC clone, if you ignore those odd and performatively different souls who shelled out for a Macintosh. Seven years after Apple had announced that “1984 won’t be like 1984”, the personal computer market was dominated by anonymous beige boxes.
As I covered in a previous article, in 1991, most businesses would still go to a specialist PC dealer to buy their machines. It would still be another five years before Dell started selling PCs online and dramatically change the shape of the industry. Nevertheless, as the article points out, change was already in the air.
