The Fading of Summer

The One I Wrote on a Cold and Lonely Winter’s Night
Part one of The Winter Trilogy1

We enter this world’s longest night A twilight time of fading life A time when love will pass away When hope of laughter will be stayed Into the dark and cold of strife This aging earth, these rivers dry The silence sings of coming dusk The withered sing of rot and rust That summered green begins to die Cruel winter’s grasp when all will cry Those lupine winds and shrouded skies Such veils beyond mind’s mortal sight Here comes solitude’s most creeping touch Here comes the numbing glow, distraction’s craft You’ll be alone, and you’ll be cold And none will stay to stave off winter’s hold What then remains? What can? What will? The flickering glow of falsest flame? The fractured sight? The abyssal plain? A thing unknown, cannot be seen The dawn’s sweet mercy, a mere memory

Might seem like a weird time of year for this, but it’s winter where I am.
