There are three symbols currently in use for Okyrhoe. The first of these you will see most often, and this is the one I use in the charts for this article.
The influence of Okyrhoe seems to manifest in a number of ways.
There is a need to deal with the impact and power of truth. It can give one the intense urge to share or reveal truths to others. On the other hand, it can make one feel that one must do anything to keep the truth from getting out.
There is often a clear difference of view between the Okyrhoe person and those who are in authority, and the latter may try to do everything in their power to silence the person.
There is a deep awareness of life and nature in all its beauty, and usually a powerful reverence for nature. Often the Okyrhoe person feels a strong urge to open the eyes of others to this beauty. And frequently, a painful experience in the person’s life stirs them to become actively involved in trying to save this beauty from being destroyed.

Rachel Carson is probably best known for writing Silent Spring, a book that prophesied that, if the chemical companies were allowed to continue dispensing their toxic pesticides, one day there would be no life left on Earth. Her critics were many, and sometimes the attempts to silence her were quite violent. But the words, once published, could not be silenced, and it is often said that this book gave birth to the environmental movement. What a lot of people don’t know is that, when Carson published her book, she already knew she was dying of breast cancer, and she deeply believed that her cancer was caused, at least in part, by these toxins.1 Her chart shows a very close conjunction of Okyrhoe with the planet Mercury, ruler of communication.
Often the Okyrhoe person feels a strong urge to open the eyes of others to the beauty of nature and to save this beauty from being destroyed.
Carson showed another side of her Okyrhoe in an essay she wrote in 1956 entitled “The Sense of Wonder.” She talked about helping children to discover nature, for it is through a oneness with the plants and animals around us that children grow up to be healthy, whole adults: “A child’s world is fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. It is our misfortune that for most of us that clear-eyed vision, that true instinct for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring, is dimmed and even lost before we reach adulthood.”2
She also wrote that adults should return to the childlike sense of wonder themselves and look anew at the world around them, for by doing so we will stop taking the beauty of the world around us for granted, and see what we need to do to stop destroying our Earth.
Al Gore, a well-known environmentalist who also has Mercury conjunct Okyrhoe, once wrote: “Silent Spring had a profound impact ... Indeed, Rachel Carson was one of the reasons I became so conscious of the environment and so involved with environmental issues.”3
Gore’s Okyrhoe in Pisces is the apex point in a double quincunx (also known as a yod, or Finger of God) with Pluto in Leo and Neptune in Libra. This means that the energy of Neptune and Pluto is focused through his Okyrhoe, making this body (and the house it falls in) a point of intense emphasis, often with a great sacrifice of other things that might distract from the point of focus. Gore mentions that one of the first things that made him begin to be concerned about the environment was the death of his sister Nancy from lung cancer.4 He found out she was sick when transiting Okyrhoe first opposed his 8th-house Okyrhoe, and the transit was still in orb when his sister died on July 11, 1984.
In 2006, Al Gore brought us the documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which told us how drastically our technology was altering the climate, and what would happen if we did not bring about some major changes in our behavior. In that year, transiting Uranus conjoined his natal Okyrhoe three times. And when the movie had its grand opening on June 2,5 transiting Okyrhoe in Cancer was square his natal Sun and trine his natal Okyrhoe within minutes of exactness.
