It’s 7am.

You woke up with the intention to write. You have a creative project you’ve been “about to start” for four months. Instead you open Instagram, spend 40 minutes consuming content about creativity and feminine entrepreneurship, and feel simultaneously inspired and behind. You exit the app feeling vaguely worse. So you journal about why you don’t follow through. You read two Substack essays about self-trust. You think: I need to understand this more deeply before I begin.

It’s noon.

You haven’t written anything. You have, however, added three books to your cart, reopened your human design chart, and messaged a friend about “this pattern I keep noticing in myself.”

You feel like you did something.

You haven’t.

I know this so well because I’ve lived it.

I spent years telling myself I was someone who needed to know more before I could act. I have stacks of journals full of trying to “figure it out”. These journals also contain the same truths over and over that felt too big, too confronting, to admit to myself I deeply wanted. When I got really honest, I had known exactly what I wanted for years— a creative business that was entirely mine, to pack my life into a single backpack and travel the world. The vision hadn’t changed. But for years it felt so much easier to ignore what I knew and wait for someone else to tell me my next step.

The shame spiral starts here. You find yourself wondering how you can know so much, but do so little with it? So you book that next reading, invest in the next course, adopt the next trending modality that promises to “make your dream life a reality”. You beat yourself up because you know what you want. And you still don’t act consistently.

This is the loop.

You don’t have a willpower problem.

This is a pattern the self-development industry profits from perpetuating.

You’re exactly where it’s been designed for you to end up: feeling stuck, lost, mistrusting of yourself and what you already know, and outsourcing your next step.

The loop is neurological. Our brains prefer the low-stakes thrill of ideas over high-stakes execution. It’s why you default to planning, preparing, and researching—and it’s exacerbated by the endless flow of information available and the dopamine hits that come with it.

Consuming information about growth activates the same dopamine reward pathway as actually completing a goal. This is why you can be deeply self-aware and completely stuck at the same time.

The belief that you need to understand yourself more before you can begin is widening the gap between your outer life and inner vision.

This is the trap. You did everything you were told would give you your dream life. You did everything right.

You’ve done all the work.

And you’re still here.
