I Suck at Titles

Titles are hard. For most of its life, Star-Crossed Alliance was simply called Princess. Creative, huh? Then I tried Princess: Prince Charming and the Alien Invaders. Sounds like a series, doesn’t it? My next attempt was Love and War. Yeah, not great. When I finally hit on “Star-Crossed” (suggesting romance as well as science fiction) and “Alliance” (suggesting the adventure part) it felt right. One of you probably has something better, but I’m happy enough, heavy sigh of relief.

My most recent novel, A Valley Girl Dilemma, had a working title of Love Story. Yeesh. Eventually I came up with Valley Girl North to suggest the 1980s as well as Canada but I knew that title wasn’t right. My WFWA mentor offered a few suggestions that included “choice” and “decision” and that’s when I thought “dilemma.” Hopefully the final title suggests 1980s as well as Julie’s dilemma in the movie Valley Girl, although my character isn’t a teenager and her decisions are more about life choices than a boyfriend.

Maybe for my next novel I should do a poll to choose a title. There must be so many people better at this than I am!
