One of the team’s I’m a part of — The Paint Club — hosted a lovely exhibition at Brighton Art Space last month of all of the artists’ (hosts who lead the painting workshops) paintings!
I was delighted to be a part of it, and see my latest vaporscapes on show.
The autumn paintings have been varnished, and despite not working on my winter paintings for this cycle in almost a year, I’ve actually learnt a lot about the visual direction I want the paintings to lean towards.
Since visiting Sweden in 2024 and Olso in September, I’ve found a bunch of artists new to and delved deeper into artists I already loved for visual and technical inspiration. Some of my favourites are:
I just love the way Balke has used the background to showcase the highlights using such light layers of paint.
Don’t get me wrong, I love The Scream by Munch, but there is so much more to his work. Not only are his works so colourful but so compositionally interesting as well. There’s always this off kilter composition contrasted by the joy of colour intermixed with death and mortality.
I’ve done a study of a version of the painting in the middle too which has really helped me understand the looseness of the brush technique he uses.
Since starting a new job, and learning a lot more about printing techniques, I’ve revisited my my charcoal drawing style again which I have then used to turn into a print!
And, to finish off the year, I drew my first self portrait since school for a collage project age 14/15 …
I’d really like to paint it, perhaps in a Munch-style, now I feel a bit more confident having done a few practice sketches beforehand, too.
This year I would really like to post more. I feel like a broken record but I think my work-life balance has improved so I can spend a few hours a week to creating as well as writing :)
