Taylor Purcell · The M Dash by M.M.LaFleur

The question I hear most in my role as M.M.LaFleur’s Director of Retail is: What actually happens at an M.M. styling appointment? It comes up a lot this time of year, as fall calendars and priorities take shape. We could all use a little expert help to show up looking and feeling our best, and the 60 minutes you invest with an M.M. stylist can truly pay back in dividends. You won’t even need to think about what to wear in the months ahead.

Just a girl standing in front of a mirror, ready to take on 3+ weeks of back to back travel.

You might think that because I work at M.M., I’m an expert in looking at my calendar and knowing immediately how to plan my own outfits, but that’s simply not the case. I’m on the road a lot, particularly in the spring and the fall, and I always make time for a styling appointment as each season begins so that my wardrobe is ready for the months ahead. I thought I’d give you an insider look into my own appointment experience at our Bryant Park location so you know what to expect.

Before I tried on a single thing, my stylist built a rack based not on a list that I asked for, but on what I shared about my life in my appointment survey, as well as some follow up questions she asked when I walked in the door. Her goal? To better understand what I was trying to solve for this season, and what I wanted to feel like when I walked out the door.

I was excited to try pieces I wouldn’t normally consider, knowing I was in good hands, and the small adjustments made a huge difference in making these looks my own. A sleeve rolled just so. A strategically tied cardigan. A hem that suddenly makes a pant look like they were cut just for you. I’ve been in enough fitting rooms to know that this part is what most of us skip (though we shouldn’t).

How cool do I look here?! I love how this outfit is based in classic neutrals but is jazzed up by the palm toile print, which is just the right amount of quirky. (Outfit: the Yiyan Blazer, the Aubrey top, and the Daria jean.)

My stylist gets bonus points for convincing me to try a pop of color. The slightly preppy draped sweater elevates a simple and comfy daytime look. Pro-tip: I’m going to get the jeans hemmed so they sit perfectly. (Outfit: the Zaid shirt, the Rosalia cardigan, and the Essential jean by FRAME.)

I’ve been on the hunt for a new office outer layer and I think I’ve found the ultimate option. The boucle texture is balanced by the soft neutral tones, and I can toss this on top of nearly all of my go-to work looks. The pants, which have adjustable hems perfect for my 5’ 2” frame, are going to be on heavy rotation in my carry on. (Outfit: The Para jardigan, the Foster Pant)

  1. Try on something you don’t think will work. More often than not, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Worst case, you learn more about your own fit and preferences.

  2. Find pieces you love, and get them tailored. For most of us, finding clothes that we love and that fit perfectly is really difficult. Instead of limiting your options, learn what easy tweaks you can make to pieces you have your eye on.

  3. Don’t skimp on styling. The right outfit combinations and accessories make a world of difference. Not sure where to start? Your stylist can help!

Our team will remember you. Our stylists keep notes, so every visit builds on the last. You’re not starting from scratch each time; you’re building a wardrobe for life, more specifically for your life.

Ready to try it for yourself? Book a styling appointment at one of our locations across the country, and we’ll take it from there. Know someone who could use an hour with our team? Let her know how we can help. Plus, when she books using your email, you’ll both get $100 off your next order.

Cheers to your most stylish season ahead!
