Seeing the Strawberries 🍓 · Meghan’s Substack

This was an Instagram Live, but I have decided to send it out as a article.

I am also healing from a DIEP FLAP, so I look like dookie-fart…but I don’t care about that shit.

So…our society keeps offering up parenting opportunities to do better.

And by “opportunities,” I mean completely avoidable and tragic deaths of young black men and women.

Most of my readership is white and so, this is for us.

We are beholden to speak about Nolan Wells because it is our responsibility to actively protect Black and Brown bodies. And we must explicitly explain to our children what our expectations are when it comes to this fact.

Just like sex, consent, safe driving, integrity with academics, protecting and believing women, etc., etc., protecting and advocating for our Black friends is our responsibility.

In order to do this, we white parents cannot wait to be perfect or perfectly educated. We cannot wait to say the “just right thing.” We must begin where we are and keep going.

Our American history, rife with injustice and violence toward Black and Brown bodies (then and now), may not be our fault, but it is our responsibility.

Just start.

JUST START. AT ALL AGES.

Do it for Nolan Wells, who should be alive right now.

And do it because The White Wall of Protection (watch the video for more) must be challenged.

Every single time we expect better from ourselves and our children, we create a small ripple of change in our culture for the good. It matters. It is on us. We can and will do it.

LEAVE ONE ACTIONABLE ITEM YOU WILL BEGIN TODAY (in the comments)!

It will help all boats rise.

Love you.
