There are evenings when you technically rest for hours and somehow do not feel rested at all.

You finish work. You change clothes. You sit on the couch. Maybe you make something to eat and tell yourself that the difficult part of the day is over.

Your body is finally still.

But your attention is not.

You check one message, then another. You open a video while eating. You remember something you need to do tomorrow. You look something up. A notification appears. You answer it. You scroll for a few minutes. You think about an unfinished conversation. You open another app without even remembering why.

Nothing about the evening looks demanding.

Yet by the time you go to bed, your mind still feels crowded.

This is one of the easiest forms of tiredness to misunderstand.

We tend to think that rest begins when physical effort stops. Sometimes it does. But your attention can continue working long after your body has sat down.

And if your attention rarely gets a break, your evenings can become another kind of shift.
