Every action has a reaction.

I see it every day.

In my job.

In fatherhood.

In problems.

In relationships.

Everywhere.

What is most important is that space between that action and the reaction.

Inside this space, lots of scenarios can happen.

For me, I fill a lot of that with negativity or immediate action, regardless of thinking about the eventual outcome.

That leads to a place you don’t want to go.

Trust me.

It doesn’t bode well.

What is needed is to create space between the emotions that you feel and what those emotions elicit immediately.

This doesn’t mean take forever to take action, but you have to create more space between the emotion and the action to allow a clearer action to be taken.

When I was coaching basketball, which I miss a lot, keeping space on offense and taking away space on defense, typically lead to wins. Whoever controls the space, controls the game.

Control the space by creating it. When something happens, notice the emotion you feel. Pause and evaluate. Create space to work through it. Don’t react immediately.
