Gisty Headlines With Little to No Context

It has been about a month since we stopped doing the Gist List, but I still see a bizarre headline that will make me think, “This would be a great one for The Gist List!”

Just last night, Gist List Doyenne (and growing ever more employable by the day) Kathleen sent me the following message.

Were the biologists frogs? Does the U.S. Forest Service hire amphibians? I kid—they’re humans (probably), but the story was no less exciting. A California man with a history of throwing fireworks at his neighbors and psychiatric disturbances held two human biologists who study frogs hostage in his camper van with his son for several hours. The two hostage takers (not the frogs or biologists or frog biologists) are facing a life sentence if convicted.

Here’s a Gist List—albeit a miniature one—featuring some of the strangest headlines we’ve seen recently with little to no context.

A law firm allegedly hired a Las Vegas actor to dress as a cowboy and round up plaintiffs for a class-action lawsuit against a landfill.

I texted this one to my dad (legendarily good parallel parker), and he said “rear view cameras should not be allowed. Great idea! Have two divisions of competitors.

This guy’s name isn’t “Adam Wonka,” it’s Adam Wodka. But I was wondering if the backstory was that he’d changed the family name just to avoid association with his great-grandfather who subjugated the Oompa Loompashi peoples.

And the best quote in the story:

The Japanese news media has even coined a new term — sune-hara, or “leg-hair harassment” — to describe the sense of grievance some women feel when they are forced to observe their male co-workers’ legs.

How Maya, a boxer, got registered to vote despite not having a valid mailing address. Bad girl! BAD GIRL!

This was a story that could only be outdone by this cat who shirked his jury summons.
