Michael Corthell · The Vegan's Voice

The statement “Veganism is the basic level of decency” asks us to examine a simple but important question: when we have the ability to reduce suffering, should we choose to do so?

Many people naturally feel compassion for animals they know personally. Dogs and cats are welcomed into our homes and treated as family, while pigs, chickens, cows, and other animals are often viewed as food rather than individuals. Yet these animals can experience fear, pain, comfort, and a desire to live.

Veganism is not about being perfect. It is about recognizing that our daily choices affect other living beings and choosing kindness when alternatives are available. Every meal is an opportunity to align our actions with the compassion many people already feel in their hearts.

The basic idea is simple: if we can live without causing unnecessary harm, why wouldn’t we try? A more compassionate future begins with each of us questioning old habits and making choices that reflect respect for all sentient beings.
