The Sun Does Not Ask Permission to Shine

I have lived many lifetimes for someone who has spent less than four decades on this earth.

If you want war stories, I’ve got a whole war chest, a cemetery of skeletons in my closet, and the battle scars and wisdom to prove it.

I would consider myself a chameleon of sorts, someone who is unafraid of reinvention. That is, until recently, when I began a reinvention that felt more personal than the others.

I’ve built a community of 350k followers on short-form platforms, but to this day, I’m not sure anyone (outside of this Substack diary of close friends and family) knows me or who I truly am.

I’ve felt the rumbling as of late, the call to action in my bones to shift, to change, to evolve, to express my purpose in a different way. But as the ominous echo builds, anxiety follows.

(Cue the inevitable inner saboteur and their incessant questioning...)

What if people don’t resonate with who I truly am? What if all they want to know is if their ex is coming back?

What if what I’ve built reflects the community itself, but none of me is in it?

This Leo Season is not just about visibility, but about becoming visible in your authenticity. Not simply, do they look at me? But more specifically, do they see me? And when they do, can I be present in it?

Maybe this is the uncomfortable part of any new beginning.

Before the world recognizes the new version of you, you have to become brave enough to sit with your new self first.

There is a strange grief that comes with evolution.

When you begin to change you often outgrow the very things that brought you recognition in the first place.

And this can be terrifying.

What happens when the thing that worked no longer feels aligned?

What happens when the version of you that everyone knows doesn’t feel like the version of you that you are becoming?

I’ve spent years building something that I am incredibly proud of.

I’ve shown up consistently.

I’ve channeled 3,500+ messages for the collective.

I’ve built a community of people who have entrusted me with their hearts, their future, their grief, their hopes, and their fears.

And I don’t take that lightly.

But lately, I’ve been asking myself a different question.

Am I allowing myself to be fully expressed within the thing I’ve created?

Or have I unconsciously created a version of myself that is easier for people to understand?

There is a difference between being valued for your gifts and being known for who you are.

And sometimes, when people come to you for what you provide, it can feel scary to show them the parts of you that don’t fit neatly into that box.

The parts that are still growing.

The parts that are messy.

The parts that are uncomfortably human.

And maybe that is the real lesson of Leo season.

Because Leo is not just about standing on a stage and having everyone look at you.

It is about having the courage to stand on that stage as yourself.

Not the version that gets the most approval.

Not the version that receives the most validation.

The real one.

The sun doesn’t wake up every morning and ask if people are appreciating it.

It doesn’t check its analytics.

It doesn’t question if it is too much or too little.

It simply shines its beautiful golden rays of warm amber light because this is what it does.

There is something incredibly freeing about this.

In embodying this in a literal sense, we can also take inspiration from the Sun card in the tarot. The Sun card is ruled by Leo, representing magnetism, charisma, star power, and confidence.

And confidence isn’t believing that everyone will understand you.

Confidence is knowing that you will be okay even if they don’t.

There is a point of visibility that actually makes us feel more alone.

Thousands of people can see you, but very few people truly know you.

The kind where you are constantly producing, constantly giving, constantly showing up, but rarely allowing yourself to be witnessed.

This is a real and honest grief that many don’t feel entitled to.

Because success in any form is seen in our society as a “win.”

No matter what it took to achieve it.

Regardless of how rooted you are in it.

It’s a good news story with a happy ending. It’s a pretty, polished package that is easily marketable.

But it can feel hollow if you aren’t expressed within it. And this nuance is difficult to articulate, especially when there are so many striving for success and just missing it.

But sometimes we must forego or defer a specific type of success for true visibility.

True visibility is not just being looked at.

It is being seen.

And being seen requires vulnerability.

It requires releasing control over how people perceive you.

It requires trusting that the people who are meant for you will not only connect with what you offer, but with who you are.

Some people may only resonate with the old version of you.

Some people may not understand the direction you are moving.

Some people may prefer the version of you that was easier to categorize.

And that is okay.

Because the goal was never to create a life where everyone understands you.

The goal was to create a life where you no longer have to abandon yourself to be accepted.

If you are creating something before anyone notices...

Let your noticing be enough.

The quiet does not mean it isn’t working.

The lack of applause does not mean you’re on the wrong path.

The empty room doesn’t mean you weren’t meant to speak.

The calm exists before the storm. The calibration before the acceleration can form.

The invisible season is humbling, but it is often where the strongest foundation is built.

So maybe my real question isn’t:

“Is anyone reading this?”

Maybe it is:

“Am I willing to keep sharing before they are?”

Because this is where true confidence begins.

Not when everyone is watching.

But when you decide you are worthy either way.
