“I gained 10 pounds literally overnight in my 40s.”

“I eat healthy and I’m still putting on weight.”

“I started exercising and my clothes still don’t fit.”

If you’ve said – or thought – any of these common refrains, you’re not alone.

You may have noticed your clothes began to get tighter around the same time your periods became irregular, the hot flashes kicked in, and your sleep went haywire. It’s reasonable to believe that a decline in estradiol (the most potent form of estrogen, produced in ovaries) and fluctuations of other hormones are to blame for weight gain in your 40s, 50s, and beyond.

Influencers with supplements and programs to sell would have you think that there’s a direct connection between hormones and your expanding waistline. In truth, it’s more of a coincidence. As a menopausal woman, that probably sounds dead wrong. It certainly did to me when I was in my late 40s and early 50’s and convinced that perimenopause was the reason I had put on nearly 10 pounds.

Boy, was I wrong.
