Inflammation is the villain du jour on the internet. Influencers blame inflammation for belly fat and bloating, then offer a solution (usually at a cost) to stamp it out. Is there any truth to their claims?

Inflammation is the body’s way of repairing itself. We’ve all seen inflammation in action. It happens when you cut yourself, get stung by an insect, or come into contact with an allergen or toxic substance.

Such “acute” inflammation includes swelling that traps the bacteria, toxin, or other invader and prevents it from further contact with the body. In most cases, the inflammation resolves within hours.

Acute inflammation comes on suddenly and it’s temporary. You may not see or feel chronic, or ongoing, inflammation, however. With chronic inflammation, the body aims to repair injuries, most often internal, but gets overwhelmed and ends up damaging cells and tissues instead.

Chronic inflammation is the type of inflammation the menopause grifters love to hate, and they have a point.
