About me

My name is Melanie Deer, I live in Mesa, AZ, but am not originally from the desert (I found a job and a husband so decided to stay).

I’m happily married to the most amazing man and we have a wonderful son who has his own challenges in life but is the light of our world and the world of almost everyone who meets him.

My day job is working in an archaeological repository. I’m the one who keeps track of the items and checks for conservation issues (in the simplest of terms; in reality, if you think doing something involves and item, I’m probably involved in the process to make that thing happen). How did I get there? I got a BA in Anthropology (concentration of archaeology) and an MA in Museum Studies (concentration of collections and curation). Been in the museum/archaeology repository field for about 15 years (as of 2025 for you future readers).

I have been writing with the hopes of being published since I was in eighth grade. I’ve always been an epic fantasy fanatic (a given having been raised on Dungeons and Dragons). My writing has been described as taking epic fantasy back to its roots. It’s where the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad, and even with the world crumbling down around the characters, there is still hope.

I made my publication debut on June 20th, 2025 with the short story “Keeper of the Flame” in the anthology Ashes and Embers from Opal Kingdom Press. It is part of the back story of two characters in the primary series I’m writing.

I recently signed on as an author with Ps and Qs Publishing and my debut novel will hopefully be released later this year! I’m excited to take you all on this journey with me.
