Why bother? - Hakeem Jeffries is Bought and Paid For

Hawk · Hawk

A rant, and Hawk says so at the top.

Hakeem Jeffries, the man who expects to hold the Speaker’s gavel in January, met privately with Jared Kushner in New York to look for common ground. That is the news. Hawk’s argument is about what the meeting did rather than what was said in it.

The leader of the House Democratic caucus holds a position with real weight, and taking that meeting extends the weight to the other side of the table. It treats Kushner’s fund and its Gulf state capital as ordinary. It treats his role as envoy on Gaza, Iran, and Ukraine as ordinary, despite his holding no government job. It treats fundraising across the same region he is negotiating in as ordinary. It treats his comments about Gaza’s beachfront development potential as ordinary.

Hawk’s position is that the only conversation between those two men should happen in a hearing room, under oath, with Jeffries asking the questions.

It also came one week after Jeffries would not restate his support for Medicare for All.
