I have come with bad news. Some of you are in a very serious relationship with chatgpt. The only problem is...the other person doesn't know you're dating them, mainly because they're not human.😭
And before you start defending yourself, let's review the evidence. It always starts innocently. On a very random day, you download chatgpt because you have an assignment due in two hours and you can't stress your brain to start thinking. Fair.
“What is photosynthesis”
Easy, then it's:
“Summarise this passage”
“break it down like you're explaining to a 5year old”
Still fair, I mean you're just trying to understand a text, right?
Then it's,
"Help me write an email."
Hm, reasonable. Maybe you're occupied or your brain just forgot how to articulate words for a few minutes.
"Can you help me reply this text?"
Ah, ordinary text? Well maybe you wanted to sound like a genius since you're not one, understandable.
Then it's,
"Do you think she likes me?"
Hmm, so we've now reached the point where a chatbot is expected to decode another human being's emotions. Okayy…
Next it's..
"What should I wear to my presentation tomorrow?"
Now the same chatbot is your stylist? Wow…okay.
Then one random Tuesday at 1:47 a.m., you're typing,
"I don't know what's wrong with me these days..."
That's when I knew... the relationship had become very serious.😭
And before you start pointing fingers, I'm guilty too, we're in this together😭. So no, I'm not calling you out, I'm calling us out🥲
But have you ever stopped to ask yourself….Why?
Why are millions of people voluntarily discussing their life and allow a chatbot influence their decisions with each passing day?
The answer is very kind of simple. Chatgpt is available 24/7, it doesn't leave you on read, it doesn't reply you with sticker, it doesn't disappear halfway through a conversation because “something came up”, it doesn't laugh at whatever situation you've got going on, it doesn't judge you whenever you ask some ridiculous questions.
Infact, you could ask chatgpt, “if I accidentally waved at someone who wasn't waving at me, should I relocate to Jigawa?” and it'll calmly give you well structured answers in bullet points😭
The funniest thing is that chatgpt has silently become that one “friend” who's somehow involved in everything.
Need a caption?
Chatgpt
Need to settle and argument because you don't want to admit you're wrong?
Chatgpt.
And then…there are the birthday messages. This one genuinely worries me because I hate seeing people do it even though I use chatgpt.
Some of you have known your best friend for ten years, you both have been through highs and lows together and yet, you open chatgpt and type,
"Write a heartfelt birthday message for my best friend. Make them cry. Add emojis. Mention how grateful I am."
Excuse me? YOU'VE KNOWN THIS PERSON FOR TEN YEARS.
Why is Chatgpt the one reminding you why you love them? Some of your friendships and relationships are being held together by chatgpt.
And don't even get me started on apologies. Some of you offend people with your full chest...Then come to ChatGPT looking for salvation,
"Help me apologize to my girlfriend."
"Write an apology to my mum."
"Make it sound sincere and genuine"
Make it sound... what?! If you don't know how sorry you are, why is a chatbot the one convincing them?
At this point, ChatGPT has become your relationship counsellor, therapist, ghostwriter, stylist, lecturer, personal assistant and crisis manager.
But beneath all the jokes, I think there's a reason we've all become so attached to ChatGPT.
I think it's because, deep down, we all want to be heard.
Think about it. You go to chatgpt with the most random question imaginable, the most embarrassing confession, a traumatic experience you had or a problem you've been carrying around for weeks. Chatgpt won't sigh. Neither does it roll it's eyes nor tell you you're being dramatic. It simply listens and maybe that's what so many of us are looking for.
It may not be solution, but just somewhere to empty our minds without feeling judged maybe that's why we keep coming back because chatgpt may not always have the right answer, but it always has an answer.
I've also noticed something else about chatgpt. It's too nice, almost too nice. You could tell it,
“I think I'm a failure”
And instead of agreeing, it'll gently remind you that a bad day or event doesn't define your entire life. Sometimes, that's exactly what we need.
But that's also where we have to be careful because life isn't always positive.
Every decision we make doesn't have one correct answer, it may end up good and it may end up bad.
Sometimes, we also need disagreement and people who will challenge our thinking instead of agreeing to it and helping us organise it. And no matter how good a chatbot or an AI can be, it can never replace human conversations, real friendships or your own ability to think for yourself.
So no...
I don't actually think you're going to marry ChatGPT. At least... I hope not.
Use it.
Learn from it.
Laugh with it.
Even vent to it if it helps you organise your thoughts, but don't let it become the only place you run to.
Some conversations are meant to happen with your friends. Some with your family. Some with a therapist. And some...With yourself. As helpful as ChatGPT is, it can never replace the warmth of a real conversation, the comfort of a hug, or the feeling of someone saying, "I'm here for you," and actually meaning it.
Now if you'll excuse me...I need to ask ChatGPT whether this article was a good idea.😭
