Stop Waiting for Demo Requests (Your Sales Team Will Thank You)

Quick question: When does your sales team start caring about a prospect?

If the answer is “when they fill out a demo request form,” we need to talk.

Here’s what I’m seeing everywhere in B2B SaaS land:

Sales sits around waiting for demo requests like they’re waiting for Christmas morning. Marketing pushes content, runs ads, posts on LinkedIn... and then everyone just waits for that magical form submission.

But the thing is: a demo request isn’t the first buying signal. It’s the strongest one.

And by the time someone requests a demo? You’ve already missed a dozen opportunities to connect with them when they were earlier in their journey.

Look, your prospects are leaving breadcrumbs everywhere:

  • They’re engaging with your LinkedIn ads

  • They’re poking around your pricing page at 11pm on a Tuesday

  • They’re liking that post you wrote about your ICP’s biggest pain point

These aren’t random actions. They’re intent signals.

The problem? Most teams ignore them because they’re not “demo-ready” yet.

This isn’t about buying another tool or implementing some complicated martech stack.

It’s just a different way of thinking about what marketing’s job actually is.

Marketing’s most valuable contribution to sales = actionable intent data.

That’s it.

When you start thinking this way, everything gets simpler.

You don’t need fancy automation. Start manual. Seriously.

Here’s the play:

Step 1: Identify the signals that matter

  • Companies clicking on your LinkedIn Ads

  • Accounts hitting high-intent pages (pricing, features, case studies)

  • LinkedIn engagement from people who match your ICP

Step 2: Put it in a spreadsheet

Yeah, a Google Sheet or Notion board works fine. List the company, the person (if you have it), what they did, and when.

Step 3: Hand it to sales weekly

Keep the bar low. If your TAM is tight, even 1-4 qualified accounts per month is gold.

Step 4: Let sales do their thing

Now they can:

  • Add these people on LinkedIn (warm connection request, anyone?)

  • Start outreach that’s actually relevant

  • Time their outreach based on real behavior, not gut feel

Because you’re no longer cold calling into the void.

You’re reaching out to people who’ve already shown interest. They just haven’t raised their hand yet.

And when sales reaches out before the prospect requests a demo? You’re not one of five vendors in their comparison spreadsheet. You’re the only one in the conversation.

That’s the difference between fighting for a deal and creating one.

Signal-based marketing forces marketing and sales to finally pull in the same direction.

Marketing stops obsessing over vanity metrics (impressions, anyone?).

Sales stops complaining that marketing “doesn’t send good leads.”

Instead, you’re both focused on the same thing: identifying and acting on real buying intent.

Want to go deeper on this?

I wrote a full breakdown of how signal-based marketing works for B2B SaaS companies. Check it out here: Signal-Based Marketing for B2B SaaS Companies

(And yeah, we built our own SaaS to automate all of this because we got tired of doing it manually. But manual still works, that’s how we started.)

Until next time,

Frank

P.S. If you’re still waiting for demo requests to start selling, you’re leaving money on the table. Start tracking one signal this week. Just one. See what happens.
