Mark Carney still cares about climate policy

Climate advocates are not happy with Mark Carney and the way he’s governed over the past year. They think he’s abandoned the commitment to climate change, and climate policy, that he displayed before he entered politics. They have every right, of course, to think that.

As I’ve written before, I think he’s playing a longer game here. That was on display during a talk he gave at Trinity College in Dublin, where he elaborated on the challenges associated with advancing climate policy in our current moment. He also reminded the audience, and anyone watching closely, that he hasn’t given up on trying.

Instead, he’s doing it under the cover of economic development, especially with his electrification strategy. He’s also using the government’s balance sheet to spread out some of the costs there — and avoid the sort of cost-of-living blowback that haunted the Trudeau government on this file.
