Every once in a while, someone asks me if I’ve read all the books on our shelves (around 4,000 titles, in case you’re wondering), daydreams aloud about how nice it would be to be paid to read, or tells me they dream of opening a bookstore so they can spend the entire day reading (must be nice to read on the clock, all day, every day!). I usually crush their dreams with a treatise on bookshop ownership (a whole lotta paying rent, managing a retail space, and emails long past working hours) and woeful nodding along.
Two weeks ago, I barely cracked open one tome (a reread of The Odyssey ahead of the movie’s release. Emily Wilson’s is the only edition for me!). This week, though, I would be more than happy to answer. About a half dozen books (short stories, poetry, and wonky tales all included!) crawled their way out of my book stack this week. Huzzah!
I like to think that regardless of how much you read (and regardless of what. Short stories and poetry count just as much as thicker tomes in the end of day count, thank you very much!), every book read is a book shelved in the annals of your mind, and that’s a lovely thought. Fill your mind’s bookcases!

The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout In midlife, we suddenly feel a much deeper authenticity about life, and in this book, Strout’s male character wrangles with family secrets, choices he made, life with a divisive president, and loneliness. Strout writes like a friend who listens to your voice notes from beginning to end: with a deep familiarity that is hard to find again. -Nadia
The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand Elin is the queen of beach reads. A weekend with best friends on Nantucket goes horribly awry in this riot of a read.

No Land to Stand On by Mahmoud Khalil We were completely awestruck to be selected as the official bookstore to carry SIGNED COPIES of No Land to Stand On. Mahmoud’s advocacy for Palestine, unwavering voice (No Land was written while Mahmoud was in detention) and humanity is bared in this incredible (dare I say, necessary) read. Communion by bell hooks From bell hooks, another classic that deserves to be on everyone’s shelf. A manifesto of self-love, turning point in the feminist movement, and necessary classic. We will absolutely host a bookclub on it in the future, so hop to it!
Contrapposto by Dave Eggers If there is a list of authors I will autobuy each and every time, Dave Eggers is in the top ten. An almost meditative novel about an artist missing, failing, then succeeding in art (and love! And life!). Reads like a Dave Eggers classic: like a slow summer read you can shuffle through in a week and stop thinking about never.

Fiction Book Club discusses The Island Club on Tuesday, July 28 at 7pm. Milly Kinkaid’s plan to fix her crumbling marriage seems to be falling apart before it even begins. She believed that moving her young family from Hollywood to Balboa Island might entice her increasingly distant husband to come home earlier after work. Instead, he’s barely coming home at all. This book club is open to all: just purchase the bookclub pick at Mavey Books and RSVP online.
