My dad once told me people are surprisingly good at taking something completely unrelated and turning it into a signal that it’s time to work. Professional athletes wear the same socks, students swear they can only study in one particular chair, and some people can’t start the day without a certain coffee mug or playlist.
Guilty as charged.
Writers have been doing this for a long time. Ernest Hemingway wrote standing up. Truman Capote said some of his best work happened lying on a couch with a cup of coffee nearby. Charles Dickens walked for miles every day. Looking back, it almost feels like every famous writer eventually came up with one strange little rule and decided not to mess with it.
I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
Your brain spends the whole day making decisions. So when it finds a routine that seems to lead somewhere useful, it hangs onto the whole thing. Write enough articles while drinking the same coffee …
