I Finally Understand What an Inspired Idea Requires.

Mary's Marvelous! · Mary's Marvelous

The other day, I had one of those wonderful, forehead-slapping moments.

It is one thing to have an inspired idea. It is another thing entirely to carry that idea into the world.

Earl Nightingale once said that ideas are like slippery fish—you have to gaff them with the point of a pencil before they get away. I’ve always loved that image. But the other day I realized something. Catching the fish matters. It matters a great deal. But it’s only the beginning. It’s remaining faithful to it that brings it to life.

I realized I’ve had big ideas my whole life. Becoming a professional cook was one. Marrying Pat was another. Opening Mary’s Marvelous was another. This cookbook is one I’ve carried with me for years.

I can also see the ideas that slipped away. Not because they weren’t good ideas or because they weren’t meant for me. I simply didn’t yet understand what an inspired idea required of me.

And then this thought grabbed me.

If I received the idea, perhaps I also received the capacity to bring it into the world.

The idea reveals a possibility. What I couldn’t yet see was the path to it.

What I never fully understood until now was that there is a distance between inspiration and expression. How we travel that distance determines whether the idea ever becomes real.

But between inspiration and expression, something almost always shows up.

Fear. Doubt. Delay. Distraction. That familiar voice that whispers, Tomorrow. Or, No...you couldn’t possibly do that.

For years, I mostly listened to those voices. I’ve noticed something: the bigger the possibility, the louder those voices seem to become. Now I see they’re simply part of the journey. An inspired idea asks me to step into territory I’ve never lived in before. If yesterday’s habits could create it, I would already have it. Of course, it feels uncertain. That’s the point.

While working on this cookbook, I realized something I don’t think I’d ever fully understood, until now.

Every day, I have a decision to make.

What will I let govern me?

Will it be fear? Delay? Will I let feeling unworthy govern? Or will I let the voice that first whispered the possibility continue to lead?

That realization changed something in me.

The path of this cookbook has never been revealed all at once. I’ve simply been given enough vision to begin. Then, one page, one recipe, one conversation, one ordinary day at a time, the next step appears. The next step only becomes visible because I took the last one.

When I got up from my desk yesterday, I hadn’t finished my cookbook.

But I left my desk with something just as valuable.

I finally understood how inspired ideas become real.

They aren’t fulfilled in the moment they arrive. They’re fulfilled in the ordinary days that follow, when I decide, again and again, what I’ll allow to govern me.

For me, perhaps that’s what faith really looks like.

Not having the whole map.

Simply trusting enough to take the next step.

From my table to yours,

Mary
